This has been perplexing me for sometime. I am able to make backups for myself seemingly on any disc brand I like (but I stick to verbatims for supports sake). I recently "went to my friends house" with some of these verbatim discs with games on them, but none of them worked. I had tried them out on my xbox to make sure they were working, as other disc brands had also not worked before.
I use latest xbc with kreon v1.0 in a Samsung SH-D163B to rip .iso's and a ATAPI Ihas324 to burn with Img-burn, my xbox is flashed with C4E's iXtreme Lite Touch.
None of my discs have been duds on any media brand.
Is there any reason this could happen due to fault of my own or is it just unfortunate?

Are you sure his xbox is flashed correctly? If so what firmware is on his xbox?
Does his xbox play originals correctly?
He is on 1.61 and he plays other backups and originals fine. The problem is that the discs come up as dvds on his console, but on mine they work perfectly fine.
I got three 360s in my house all on LT 1.1
Mine ------- Lite-On 93450 --- Only use Verbs but will read ALL media.
Son -------- BenQ ------------ Only use Verbs but will read ALL media.
Daughter --- Lite-On 73850 --- Won't read Verbs at all, only uses cheap media.
I believe your friend's 360 is like my daughter's. I've never been able to figure it out. Lens cleanings, POT tweaks, etc, still same result. Go figure.
