Hello afterdawners! I'm preety new here, so I dont know the rules, please do delete/alter if needed, I've been reading afterdawn forums for at least 4 years but never registered to post anything, cause usually all my questions are answered by my good old friend the search button and google.

The reason I'm posting this small guide is to help others that didn't find an answer to how to properly burn their x360 backup on a DVD-R DL(DVDminusR) and be able to play it,
see, a week ago my brothers x360 gave a RROD and my mother turned to me so I could fix it, taking the advantage of having to take it all apart i flashed it aswell (first time I saw a x360 inwards and all went freaking spectacular), yet since i had to try it out to be sure it was properly flashed and working with backups, bought a 5x case of verbatim DVD-R DL so I could make the tryout. BUT... after buying I realized that almost everyone states that DVD-R won't work for X360 backups, period...

WRONG!!!

I actually burnt and played sucessfully a DVD-R DL.
Yes I know DVD-R DL don't have the feature to set layer breaks, and that layer breaks are required, blah, blah... Actually in DVD-R DL you don't need to set any layer break nor you need the .DVD file.

Here's how and what you need:

Check list:

- 1 XBOX360 Gaming station with Samsung or Benq drive flashed (i used the latest iXtreme 1.61, so I'm not sure about previous releases, unsure to work on LiteON(if someone could test it would be great!! post results here please!) and it WON'T WORK on Hitachi, sorry...)

- 1 .iso x360 game backup properly patched

- 1 DVD-R DL media ( I used Verbatim, but you can try cheap media if you want)

- 1 DL suitable burner (mine's a SONY NEC Optiarc ad-5590a, at sony it doesn't say if +R are supported, that's why I chose -R)

- mRDL v1.1 software (google is your best friend!!But u can PM me, I think..)

Procedure:

-First backup the game, search the afterdawn if u don't know how,

-Then patch it or check if already patched with abgx360 Click here if you don't know how

-Then after downloading mRDL, open the rar file and drag&drop the application onto the desktop or wherever u want it, no installation required

-Start mRDL and click the icon with the -R, hit "File" and select the .iso (change the .000 to .iso if backed up in mRDL)

-Now it should appear as "Xbox2" below.

-Select your burner from the list and just hit "Start"

-Now the game is being burn on the DVD-R DL.
In the end it pops up a SUCESSFUL window click and go play the damned thing on ur xbox!

See! The burn process on a -R is so difficult and complicated, I almost broke a nail!! Nahh! Almost broke a nail writting this! :P

Last notes:

-I think it is only burnt at 4x because of the time it takes. I was surprised but these DVDs actually work better than the DVD+R, they're, more silent and faster (at least in my Samsung th-s943 ms25).

-You can also backup your games with mRDL clicking on the +R button.

-After burn, if u check the dvd with abgx360 it will give an error saying it can't verify the layerbreak because it's not a DVD+R DL but FW 1.6 boots with no problems...

Please excuse any of my kicks on english grammar cause i'm not english.. :/

Have FUN!!! :D

were you using dvd minus or plus? in plus you have to set layer break if you don't have or use the .dvd file, but usually the layer break in plus is the correct one so no need to do it. in minuses its burnt to the same layer break as the dvd, so it won't act up and still get recognisable and playable on x360.

but this guide is for those who search on how to burn backups to minus and couldn't find how to or were told that it's not possible, it gets pretty confusing cause some guides don't specify wich type of DL to be used, and like me, got all the trouble to set layer breaks and set layer jump just to throw a perfectly good DVD-R DL to the bin. the most majority uses the plus, as to "it can't be done" myth. really, i've seen a lot of of post stating that, and now my son its actually playing in a dvd-
Some countries like portugal the dvd- is cheaper.

I've never used 1.61 but I assume that since it bypasses security checks, that it will boot a game with no/incorrect layer break (as long as it burned structurally correct). I'm also assuming that the 360 has no problem reading -R DL media, it's just that since the layer break can't be set on that media tpye, +R DL is recommended.

i'm not sure, but i tried burning a -R using imgburn without setting the layerbreaks and the x360 refuse to be loaded, gave the unreadable disk, try clean etc etc..
yet i recall to read that another user of mrdl said that his fw was 1.4 i think, but no one believed him to be able to play a -R, i've been playing all day and the difference from an original to the -R is that the drive seems to have less vibration, and the noise dropped to be fairly noticeable than the original.. quite funny it looks like the burn its better than the original.

im really new to the x360, it belongs to my brothers and only now that it gave the rrod i could mess with it a bit, so in one day, repaired and flashed it. it's not only flashed to 1.61 it also have the lastest update from MS with a usb pen, i remember it was bought in 2006 already including a 20 gb hd.

Hello everyone !

Thanks Caliopeya !!!!!! It worked for me !!!!!!!!!!!!

I have a flashed Toshiba / Samsung drive with 1.4 iXtreme firmware. I use the v14-15.ppf to patch all games whether it's with +R or ("and now" I should say) -R discs.

I use an Optiarc DVD RW AD-5200A burner with 4x DVD-R DL Verbatim.

I followed every steps of your tutorial and it simply did what you said it would! I know that, put like that, it sound stupid but coming back from all the "it won't work posts" I read before, it is one big relief.

So everyone that meets the requirements of this tutorial should have no problem getting the job done.

Then again thanks for this tutorial Caliopeya!

Cheers!
