i have a 40 ps3 gig which freezes into loads of mad colours 10 seconds after turning it on and there is no noise from the fan whatsoever. but when i did this so called fan test it comes on like an hoover, do i need a new fan or is it another part i need. cheers
A crash within 10 seconds wouldn't be the fan (unless it just turns off; that can be caused by a jammed fan). The 40GB fan makes virtually no noise at idle; the only way to tell it is on is to hold a small piece of paper in front of the exhaust vent on the back.
Probably the grease under the GPU cover (the one that says RSX on it). If I were in your position, I would get some video ram coolers for the memory, an old chipset cooler or video cooler for the chipset, a pot to control the fan, and some arctic silver 5 and arctic adhesive to transfer the heat into all these items.
lol KillerBug, thankyou so much for the reply but i didnt really get any of that 2nd part so so sorry,,, i i only know the very little i know by watching. i already got another fan before i saw your reply an you were right it was the same... the fan doesnt come on at all, ive tried the paper an everything. is there anything else that could be sgopping the fan from working. thank you so much. clare xx
hi KillerBug, thanks for the reply. my friend has just been round and tried the fan with a bit of plastic bag and there was movement so should i do more research in what you said in your 1st post.
