hi guys

i have just performed the POT calibration on my Hitachi 47 DVD Drive (yes i know they suck balls, but its all i've got for now).

my drive was reading 4.28 with the multimeter set at 20 ohms to start with and i have had to reduce it right down to 2.71 to get it to read my backups (although the drive sounds awful!! sounds like it is re-reading...lots)

my questions are that if i lower the reading even more will it make the drive more reliable (currently it is reading backups *most* of the time). i know that lowering more than 2.7 will dramatically reduce the life span of my drive (may well be a good thing :))

or is there a magical number i need to set it to and i just need to play around to get it right (and stop it sounding so crunchy :))

Cheers.

Chris

EDIT:
i have just bought an larger HDD so hopefully i can just copy the game to the HDD and save my crappy hitachi :)

Using the hard drive is a good idea, buying a replacement laser for 10 bucks or less shipped on ebay is even better!

"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

Cheers for the reply mate, is it so rubbish becasue the laser is on its way out? or is it just because they are pants by design?

would it be bettter to buy a Ben-Q and use my hitachi drive key? they're only 17quid on ebay too, or are they just as susceptible to not reading disks?

problem here is you would need to spoof with 1.61 firmware, as there its recommended you don't spoof a drive with LT.

this isn't too much of a worry, i haven't logged into live since i have flashed my drive.

Do you know if the iXtreme guys are going to update the older style (non-LT) firmware? or is 1.61 the last they will do?

is Ben-Q the best drive to go for or are any of the others better for reading backups?

cheers,

Chris
