hey guys, just wondering what your opinion is on standing the xbox 360 up, or laying it down flat... which one is better, does 1 cause rrod faster? Has one been proven a better method than the other (pros/cons)?
Horizontal, i had my drive magnet fall off during a game session. all i can tell you is the horrible cracking/ginding sound was horrifying, my friend also agreed as he got his assassins creed back in several pieces.
yep.. thats how I have my system, laying flat... I too have seen crappy M$ thermal paste run down and cover everything except the actual chip(s).. I figure more air is probably drawn in through the bottom grill when laying flat.. versus when you stand it up, your covering that bottom grill/vent.
I have kept all of mine vertical and have yet to get a RROD. I also make sure they have space on all sides to make sure they are dissipating heat correctly. As leerage mentioned though, I have seen a bunch of consoles with thermal paste running down the chips...but I would also bet they were running too hot because of obstructions and lack of ventilation. I would also wager my fan mods help too.
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. I've got to admit, I read an article a while back from an xbox 360 engineer that had said that when the console is vertical, it will allow more air to flow through the console.
Since then I've always kept the one I am suing vertical
