basically i had YLOD, sent it off to a mate for repair, he said the graphics gone on it, gave it me back, i turned it on and had no YLOD, but this black screen i'd heard about. so i went into the safe mode to try the restore options, no luck as it was saying my hard drive cannot be accessed (both my hard drives) so i restored the system, it did that, did the sony bootup screen (not the normal ps3 bootup) and asked me to connect controller, did that, next select language, english, did that, next was did i want to output using HDMI, yes, did that, then it went to no signal on my tv (does that when i go through the restore system before, just flicks off then back on to ps3) but this time it just stayed on the no signal screen and my ps3 was still running.
so i turned it off after a while, booted ps3 back up, same sony bootup screen, same process, same spot of failure.
anyone know what i can do? tried the other restore options and the USB update but it said it couldn't find applicable update data, even though it was on the USB in the right folders.
It is trying to do a resolution that your screen does not support. If you don't set it to use HDMI, you should be able to get to the XMB...and from there you can manually set the supported resolutions.
