Overall PS3 sales close in on Xbox 360

article published on 2 August, 2010

Sony has released their latest Q1 results, and for the quarter ended June 30th the company sold 2.4 million PlayStation 3 consoles. Globally, the PS3 has now hit 38.1 million consoles sold, gaining strong momentum the longer the console is available. In its first fiscal year of availability, 2006, Sony sold 3.5 million consoles. For the fiscal 2007, Sony sold 9.1 million units. For ... [ read the full article ]

This article is probably talking worldwide. I believe that in the US the 360 still has a 2:1 advantage.

Good job for Sony though. They have turned things around quite a bit since 2007 when the PS3 was looking almost dead.

Eh...it seems like Sony is trying to kill the PS3 by alienating all their loyal customers...it is just that Microsoft is doing a better job of the same project.

It goes in cycles.
Microsoft has just released an new Xbox S and it is selling strongly all over the world (even in Japan, perhaps surprisingly).
The gap will grow again, as it will when Kinect launches later this year.
The interesting thing is that Microsoft's gaming division made almost $700 million in the last quarter.

This means that along with the reduced costs of the Xbox S Valhalla sku they are in a position to get very aggressive on pricing if they feel the need to.

Meanwhile whilst Sony have enjoyed much better sales with their PS3 slim thanks to it's price cut they still sell every one at a loss (and the loss on each unit at the start was enormous).
It may be that they never truly make any money on PS3, which is an absolute disaster for them.

I have to say being an owner of all 3 consoles that the Xbox 360 is the better unit. Loads quick and it doesn't have that annoying loud fan kicking in when the console gets hot (happens on my PS3). I was quite excited when PS3 Home came out but it's not very good. It has the potential to be huge but it's pretty boring.

The main problem with the PS3 and a big part of it's failure is this. Did Sony make a Games Console or a multi media unit? Sony should have learned from the Philips CDi.

People are not keen on multi media units for gaming.
This has also caused a distraction from what the PS3 should have been - a games machine. Now Sony are way too busy adding Blu ray updates and multi media software programs instead of improving the online gaming sector and gaming in general.

Worse of all are the software houses who are adding to the problem. The best gaming eras were Sega vs Nintendo. We had EXCLUSIVE games on each machine which made going to the shops exciting and if you were the lucky owner of that exclusive game on your console? you felt a little special.

Nintendo seems to be the only company to have got it right and the only area that needs improvement would be the graphics department. Nothing they cant sort in their next console.

Who's to say the won't EVER make a profit? Once PS Move is released and more people buy into FirstPlay and PS Plus, Sony can look at alternative producing for their console.. The consoles are always getting upgraded anyway to reduce costs. Like, a few months back, a new model Slim came out with an upgraded wireless card.. Simple things like that, and the 32nm CPU too.. They just don't make a big thing of it, I only found that info on ONE website..

I have all three and I use the PS3 the most. Mainly because the hard drive upgrade is cheap and on-line gaming is free. As for multimedia aspect of the three consoles, PS3 wins... It's simply a better machine because it "interacts" with other Sony products, PSPs and HD camcorders. The AVCHD file formats are great, there's no need to convert anything now, just drag and drop (onto the PS3 or external portable drives). Now that our family members all have the PS3, sharing b'day, graduation, gathering and school events are very simple :) And yes, the video conference on the PS3 is the price of the Eye... Oh yeah, it plays Blu-rays too!

Those sales will just be people upgrading the system again in Japan at least it's avg real life sales there is only 3,000 units per month, where as the PS3 generally sells above the Wii there now.

The PS3 loss hasn't been around since the start of last year, so Sony now turn a profit on every unit now, in fact it made a 300 million + profit for sony just this quater.

glassd,

Thanks for posting that, I was gonna say Sony finally produced profits a short while ago on PS3s; still I don't think the move was the right direction to go with how they did it anymore than the PSPGo; whether or not that will hinder their bottom line or make them see profit time will tell as early as this Xmas, but I think its too little too late trying to take Big N head on, even for MS with Kinect.

Your points are valid as the multimedia side goes. But how many people buy a console for the multimedia features? Most choose a console by the games because that's why we buy these consoles. I chose the Xbox because i feel they have a better library of games. Me, i dont even care about any other aspects of the machine, all i am concerned with are the games.

But it's great that you love your PS3. My brother has one and he loves it too.

But i truly feel that if the PS3 was released as more of a game machine and priced at $399.00 from the start, the PS3 would've definitely outsold the xbox long ago.

Maybe by the time the Xbox 360 is dead and the new 720, or whatever the new box will be called, is out Sony will catch up with the 360 in sales. It is humorous that finally Sony and Microsoft are waking up and providing motion controls like the better console has done from the start. Can you say running scared!

All too true, look at the PS2 era, it was technically multi-media machine as well, but the core focus was games; Sony somehow lost sight of what was important in a game machine.

Yea they are, so are real wars, but they will continue to go on; so as long as they do, we may as well enjoy em.

I own all 3 consoles as well, took me a while, but I definitely didn't buy the PS3 for gaming as 360 took care of that for the most part. I usually make it a rule that a console needs at least 10 first party games for me to even consider warranting buying the console; sony sold me on the backward compatible ones with Other OS, then fucked me with a choice to make; OS or games. Literally wouldn't even let me go on the PSN or Sony Store without updating the firmware; pissed me the fuck right off, I swear because I am major offended, to that I hope Sony takes a hard hit and can't bounce back at all come the next gen consoles.

Sorry but Sony has had Motion Control Gaming since the PS2 with EyeToy and it is widely known that the current iteration of PS Move has been worked on and in development since at least 2000 or so...of which it has probably influenced the Wii's interaction design. I believe PS Move has the best of different & all worlds (accurate controller input design, controller less capability PLUS voice activation/input & control) and yet it has actually in essence been the "first" to do this as I said earlier being from PS2 days.

As far as 360 "S" sales that is a bit of a misnomer. It has not really sold that well so far, as the "bulk" of the 360's recent sales "growth" and spike was more from the price drop of old stock. I actually thought the PS3 would be a year more out before it closed the gap, but looking at the fall/Christmas line up (ESPECIALLY with GT5) it is going to be close for the second place spot by end of 2010! There are also so many other factors to weigh and consider besides just sales of consoles but I don't feel like having to defend factual information that should already be common knowledge by now.

The 360 is near the limit right now...some games don't even get made for the 360 because of the quality reductions that would be required...the hardware isn't as fast, and the disks only hold as much as a PS2 disk. With that mind, I think we are going to start seeing a lot more PS3 exclusives coming down the pipe soon...and gamers follow the games.

1.) I like the multimedia...I just wish the PS3 had multimedia support; the thing won't even play a f**king MKV file! That said, the blu ray drive has helped sales a lot, and I think it will help sales a lot more once we start seeing games that are one bluray on PS3, and 4 DVDs on the 360...and the Playstation line has always allowed for the default multimedia function of the disk used...the first was a CD/Video CD player, the second was a dvd player, and the third is bluray.

2.) The best era was not sega vs nintendo, or at least not for the reason given. It sucked being forced to buy 2 consoles in order to play the games you want to play. Sure, we still have the same problem to a certain point, but no where near as bad as the old days...I can only think of 2 XboX360 exclusives I would want to play...and there are PS3 games I still want to buy that I want to play more.

3.) Nintendo is very good at selling to middle-aged women and parents...real gamers generally don't want to have to move when playing games. I really don't think they "have it right" because they are going after a completely different segment, and they "have it right" with the casual gamers, but they don't "have it right" with real gamers, and that includes a lot of their loyal fans that stuck with them, even through the N64 & it's 3-handed controller.

1) It is a pain in the but to walk to the pc, setup the streaming, and walk back...and if you are already at the PC, then just watch it on the PC!

2) There is a quality reduction when streaming in the way described. Considering that the system outputs at 1080P, and most MKV files are much less than this, any quality drop is very noticeable.

3) Even if you cave to the limitations of MPG, you still can't watch movies from a USB drive, as Sony intentionally blocks UDF over USB, and does not offer any filesystem supporting files over 4GB.

I am a console collector and had both machines during this period and didnt find it a problem buying exclusive games for either machine because they were worth it. Nintendo made the Mario series, Sega made sonic to compete. People actually sat down and planned what games to make for their machines and with limited processing power they pushed the boundaries. Today, Programmers have become lazy. Um??? lets make ANOTHER gun game. Shall we add aliens or humans? Games of today are CRAP and repetitive with the occasional good game such as God of war or Grand Theft Auto series as examples. To prove a point? How many legendary classics can you name from the sega/nintendo/pc engine era? Now how many true legendary games can you name today and of those games how many are gun/shooters? :o)

Your Nintendo comment was comical because only a small part of it is true. Kids LOVE the Wii because Nintendo made the unit a games machine that ALL can play but specifically aimed at kids. If you were right? then explain why the machine out sold Sony and Microsoft by a vast margin? The answer is because Nintendo kept the Wii fun without over complicating things or over pricing it.

You also mentioned the PS3 wont play MKV files? My point is proven. Is it a games machine or multimedia machine? Sony themselves dont know which is why they restrict it, dont fully support all media formats, built some machines with card slots and others without. The PS3 is a technical mess and I find the updates annoying not to mention worrying!

Credit to microsoft - other than the RROD? at least their machine remains consistent with the occasional face lift.

I dont trust the Stock Market much because it can be manipulated. I tend to believe the Wall Street Journal and New York Times over some poster voicing brain farts on a forum. If it would help, I can link a game site write up that puts it in Layman?s terms.
