Overall PS3 sales close in on Xbox 360

article published on 2 August, 2010

Sony has released their latest Q1 results, and for the quarter ended June 30th the company sold 2.4 million PlayStation 3 consoles. Globally, the PS3 has now hit 38.1 million consoles sold, gaining strong momentum the longer the console is available. In its first fiscal year of availability, 2006, Sony sold 3.5 million consoles. For the fiscal 2007, Sony sold 9.1 million units. For ... [ read the full article ]

Good job for Sony though. They have turned things around quite a bit since 2007 when the PS3 was looking almost dead.
Well, there's your problem. It never looked "almost dead" to begin with. It simply had a later start. There's a BIG difference...

Don't you just love the hypocrisy that floods online message boards? ;-)

so....um...which is better? 360 or PS3? I have a modded wii with an external hard drive. I am a bit of a noob with this kind of thing. Why is that PS3 has some guys that the 360 doesn't and vice versa? as far as power, game choices, and durability, which is better?

I have to say being an owner of all 3 consoles that the Xbox 360 is the better unit. Loads quick and it doesn't have that annoying loud fan kicking in when the console gets hot (happens on my PS3). I was quite excited when PS3 Home came out but it's not very good. It has the potential to be huge but it's pretty boring.

The main problem with the PS3 and a big part of it's failure is this. Did Sony make a Games Console or a multi media unit? Sony should have learned from the Philips CDi.

People are not keen on multi media units for gaming.
This has also caused a distraction from what the PS3 should have been - a games machine. Now Sony are way too busy adding Blu ray updates and multi media software programs instead of improving the online gaming sector and gaming in general.

"potential to be special" - with nearly 40 million units sold (to consumers who are not keen, allegedly) that is a laughable statement, to compare it to the Phillips unit which sold around a million units is positively criminal.

you are stuck in the wrong decade methinks..it's not 2007 anymore Toto.

Yes 40 million units have been sold and I own one of them simply because I thought it would be as good (FUN) as the PS2. The PS2 had exclusive games and was exciting to play. The PS3 lacks the exclusivity of the PS2 and has lost its way. Lots of promises, delays, updates to remove features instead of adding or encouraging owners to develope programs for it and the average games library which can be found on other platforms. Then there is the 6 axis issue which added to the delay of the PS3 - what was the point of it when they go on to bring out the Playstation move a few years later?

This is why the Sega vs Nintendo, Neo Geo & PC Engine eras were the best for gaming - Exclusivity.

I'm going to be brutally honest here. (At present) For gaming the Xbox 360 is the best because it starts up and loads quicker than the PS3. Graphically they are pretty much the same with slight and I mean slight differences when you compare some games side by side. However if you are going to buy one avoid buying the older machines because of the overheating issues (Red ring of death). I experienced this with my first Xbox 360. Buy a new generation unit such as the latest slimline black version. The Xbox 360 also has a much better online facility than Sony PS3 network (PSN).

Saying that? Beware of 2 things - (1) You may want to wait until the second half of 2011 when Sony and all the big guns release their new generation 3D TVS that do not require glasses. Sony are adding 3D support to their Blu-Ray including the PS3 so this might give the PS3 the edge in new generation games as the Xbox360 does not have Blu-Ray.

(2) Nintendo are releasing a new Wii with unannounced features and are offering a part exchange on the old consoles. This indicates the new machine will be upgraded in hardware and most probably graphically too.
So keep reading gaming news before you make your purchase.

I agree with Gnawnivek just get both if you can...but you actually need some additional info that is a bit more correct in that the PS3 really has more TRUE exclusives not timed exclusives or fake exclusives that are available on PC like the 360.

Also don't wait on what "may be" for Sony TV's or this new Wii (which is all rumor and absolutely nothing has been confirmed let alone sounds abnormally fake as a company would NEVER do a buy back/part exchange) as that can go nowhere and you will be left out. Other than that I am not delving into personal opinion information that are not based on true fact.

The best info I could offer to you is this ~

1) Think about where your friends mostly play on
2) Think about possible reoccurring charges that add up
3) Think about additional costs for upgrades if needed
4) Think about reliability
5) Think about what genre/style of games you will most likely play
6) Think about features & capability
7) Think about the bottom line for what you get (cost vs everything above vs fun)

Then make your decision. But honestly just try to get both...that makes it much simpler and broadens your area!

Yes I agree, its definitely worth getting both machines if you can afford it. I have both because of friends and family being online on both networks plus you can circulate your library of games so you dont miss out.

Don't write off Nintendo just yet, you never know what those guys will pull out the bag.

I have a modded Wii and love It! I'm looking forward to what Nintendo comes out with in the coming years. I think I will start my new console collection with a PS3 and go on from there.

Even if it does take over it wont be by much and by the time that happens? It will be next Generation time.

The only thing that could save the PS3 reputation now is 3D. Lets see what blu-ray 3D and 3D games bring.
