Can I get Live only games on disc?

I really want to get Monkey Island 2 on live but if I get banned I don't want to lose it. I have never bought a game on live, so I don't really understand how it works. Would I always have to be connected to live to play MI2? Or would I only have to go on live to buy it?
As I don't subscribe on a yearly basis (I never have the time to use it)I don't want to get Monkey Island, only to be locked out of playing it when my live account expires. So would I be able to buy it then back that up on disc, then play like a normal game?

I'm assuming not but then Rockstar released GTA;episodes on disc so it confuses me.
