What information would i lose if i was to restore the file system, or rebuild the database, hoping to fix a black screen problem, and i want to try and avoid having to re download my games that have been shared, thank you!
There is nothing to restore from; this is not windows...it is PS3. As for the database, there is no way to rebuild it, in fact there isn't even a known way of finding the index to begin with.

The recovery menu fixes the file system and rebuilds the database, i think fixing the file system, would be like defragging on a PC.

You could always use the back up feature, im assuming restoring the file system would delete everything, but i don't know, if you explain to the people that you shared with, im sure they would let you re download.

If the screen is black, then the problem is bigger than a fragmented file system.
