Actually, they're activating 200K per day, not the same as selling.
Accuracy in reporting. It sort of matters.

The vast majority of activations are new purchases. I realize that sometimes someone switches networks with an Android, but it is not very common since you can get android devices on every network (where iPhone users are forced to buy from AT&T, break their contract, and then switch to another carrier if they want a working network). Also, most activations are made at the time of sale...usually by the salesperson who sold the device.

If only Samsung had brains(or may be generosity) to put Android support in Wave. that number could have been double..

Absolutely serious.
If you have some reason to construe Schmidt's statement that these activations are equivalent to sales, then show us. Otherwise, you should correct the headline. He said "activations" not sales. That was intentionally done in the hopes that it would be reported as sales. Basic marketing. Nice job falling for it.
If even one phone is reactivated (and secondary sales as well as wipes and ROM flashing might require that multiple times) then your reporting is inaccurate. Are you interested in reporting facts or assumptions?

I have done all sorts of custom rom installs, and I have even replaced the radio baseband several times...I have never had to reactivate...unless he is talking about that call I have to make when I change radios...but I don't think that is activation.

Fine, then all the iphone app downloads apple brags about don't count either because it could be people re-downloading an app after having to hard reset the phone or switching from 3g, to 3gS, to iphone 4. Or the same thing instead of iphone sales being amazing, it must be people reactivating it. See how ridiculous and petty you sound?
New activation occurs when a new phone is turned activated to work on a network. It goes both ways, instead of us having to prove to you if activation = new phone sales, if you're so smart how about you show us where it doesn't.

I don't defend Apple when they do that. But more importantly--what exactly does Apple have to do with this?

New activations also happen when a phone is bought used. Don't be naive. Whoever wrote this article jumped to the erroneous conclusion that activations = sales. Wrong. If they don't want to admit it, fine, but it's seems sort of glaring and obvious. Report it as activations and it's accurate. Report it as sales, and you're doing the will of Google's marketing people.
I would think more reporters would have the savvy to avoid falling for that kind of trap. Guess I'm wrong.

How does "when a phone is bought used" not imply a sale? I could give you a few people switching cell companies and a few phones getting "handed-down" inside of families, but if a phone is purchased, then it must have been sold...not only is your argument petty and pointless, but your argument is self defeating. The title of the article is not "200,000 NEW Android devices sold every day".
