Engadget is reporting today that Sony Ericsson is currently working on a "PSP Phone," one that will run on Android 3.0 and create a whole new "gaming ecosystem."
The report cites "trusted sources" who describe the device as a "cross between the Samsung Captivate and the PSP Go."
Sony's phone will have a PSP Go-style slideout instead of a QWERTY keypad, and a 1 GHz Snapdragon processor ... [ read the full article ]

What is taking them so long? The PSPhone should have been released back before they did the PSPgo!

That would be cool. It would've been awesome! if it had come earlier..but still we wouldn't have gotter the 1 ghz processor if it had come earlier and not even Android 3.0!!

Granted, 3.0 would not have been available when the PSPgo came out; neither would 1GHZ processors...but that would not have stopped them from making the best android device for gamers, modern phones like the DroidX and even the Droid2 included. By the time 3.0 comes out, the 1GHZ snapdragon will be so old it will almost be forgotten...so once again, Sony will be well behind the curve...assuming they do anything at all, and this isn't just a rumor.

But didn't the PSPgo bomb horribly? Why would it be any better as a phone?
Anybody else notice that the more a phone does the lousier it gets at making phone calls?

I'm somewhat confused by your message. In the beginning, you seem to be backing up Sony for having not made this phone sooner, yet in the end you bash them for using what you believe will be an obsolete processor(which by the way I think is a bit of an exageration to say it'll be so old that it will almost forgotten)by the time the pone comes out. I mean come on. Aren't these just rumors? And how can they boast a faster processor if none exists yet? Surely some of the specs mentioned here could change before it finally launches. And even if they don't, it's not like every other phone that is put out won't soon be outdone by a newer, more davanced model in just a few short months. I just think we're panicking and writing off a phone we're not even completely sure will even be made, way too early is all.

Personally I think what took so long is that Sony wanted to see what was the best OS to use for their phone, assuming this article will have any merit in the future. They don't want to rush this project because look at what happened to Nokia when they attempted the N-Gage, it severely flopped quicker than quick and cost the company millions of $. Personally when Sony rushes with an idea it tends to blow up in their face, as with the PSP-Go.
Either way lets save our arguments until Sony confirms they are indeed working on this with Ericsson.

Phones can get away with a download-only sales format...it works great for both iPhone and Android. Plus, not everyone is willing to buy a PSP...but a lot of people are willing to buy a nice phone that happens to have PSP game support...and even if you loose money on the device, you make a fortune on the games.

If it sounded like I was defending them, I appologise. I assume that 3.0 will be better than 2.2, but even if the PSPgo had been the PSPhone, and it had launched with 2.0.1 and a 600mhz CPU, it still would be better for games than anything currently on the market. As to bashing the CPU, there are already 1.2ghz dual-core ARM processors available...and I am sure that Motorola and HTC are trying to build phones around them already. Once you can get a 2.4GHZ chip in a phone, who would want some old 1.0GHZ chip?

the psp was probably the best handheld console. what fucked all that up was the piracy involved, which meant after a while no good games came out. now, who wants to buy a gaming phone with no good games???
also it would be highly doubtful that there would be psp games ported to android. more likely a dual-boot type system would be used or some adaptation of the psp OS. sony would not allow their games to be used on a device which was not manufactured by them.
would it not be simpler to get a psp app for sony erricson phones??
