hello all,
will it make any sort of difference if I am using a fast DVD-Rom reader (like the lite-on 166s),when using DVDShrink 3.1.7, or am I limited by my processor/bus/ram/HD/etc.? (BTW: I have an AMD 1.2ghz, 1Gig RAM, 80GB + 120 GB HD,and XP Pro)

I ask this because there are a number of places online that state that these DVD-roms can be flashed to rip at 14 and even 16x, but that wouldn't be necessary/make a difference if DVDShrink is more dependent on my CPU than on the ripper. In other words, I know that when using other programs like DVDdecrypter, faster ripping is better, but what about DVDShrink?

Thanks,
oquela

The LTD-166S should be able to rip up to 14X out of the box with no hacks or flashes needed - mine did.

The faster the drive can rip, the faster Shrink can do it's thing :)

Mine rips at up to 15x (The best I've gotten was 15.9x) on single layer and recordable discs, but on dual layer discs it normally peaks at 10x-12x and averages around 2/3 of its single layer speeds.

Nephilim/vurbal:
Thanks for the quick reply. vurbal, did you flash your frive, or did you get those speeds out of the box? Also, how old are your drives?

I'm asking because the highest rip speed (using dvddecrypter) was roughly 6.x speed, and it depended on the disk. My drive is about a year and a half old, and I just purchased a "new" version of the 166s (it now says JVC lite-on JLMS, as opposed to the old "lite-on LTD-166s) Maybe these new ones are faster from the company???

My drive is about a year and a half old as well and I typically get an average of 6X with Decrypter.

To find out the max speed on a drive you can use a free app called DVD Info Pro to run a speed test:

Mine is around a month old and I got these speeds out of the box. I also have a friend with the same drive, but around 1 year old, and he gets about the same rip speeds. I'd go with Nephilim's suggestion if you're wondering about your drive's speed.

BTW, keep in mind that when I say up to, I mean the peak speed, not an average transfer rate. Mine probably averages around 6x on dual layer discs and around 10x-12x on single layer and recordables.
