Android outsold iPhone last quarter, globally

article published on 14 August, 2010

According to analysts at Gartner Research, Android OS devices outsold the Apple iPhone, globally, for the Q2 2010, moving into third place in the market. 10.6 million smartphones using the Google-made platform were sold during the quarter, good for 17.2 percent of the market. Apple sold 8.47 million iPhones for the quarter, good for 14.2 percent of the market. Android's strong quarter ... [ read the full article ]

I believe that all your figures where taken from the second quarter when no one was buying iPhone waiting for the iPhone 4 to come out; let's see what the 3rd quarter brings.

Q2 includes the iCrap4 launch. Apple is on its way back to where it belongs, irrelevancy. Jobs will probably need to steal another organ soon from the stress.

With your user name I will assume you are an Apple hater, but before you declare the death of Apple and the Iphone, we should probably think about the Apple OS being on one line of phones while Android is on well over a dozen smart phones. So, I am not sure if those numbers tell a story of people's choice or dominance by abundance.

given the fact that iphone is only on 1 kind of phone. thats obvious. every cell phone manufacture and their mother is making a phone that uses Android. its gonna put Mac back where it belongs. back in the niche market of less that 5%

This is great. I just recently got a Nexus One running Android 2.2 Froyo and I have to say, it's awesome. I've used iOS4 and was not really impressed by it. It's too closed up.

The fact of the matter is your headline is totally disingenuous and/or misleading as you are comparing apples (no pun intended) and oranges. No Andriod phone has outsold the iPhone (as your headline implies). It?s that plane; it?s that simple. I will definitely concede it?s taken a plethora of Andriod devices to finally overtake the iPhone in sales. No conjecture here folks; just the facts.

You're right, the headline should say iOS instead of iPhone, however there happens to only be ONE iOS smartphone, the iPhone. Fancy that? The headline is not misleading.

Yeah I'm sure Jobbo is all torn up about the $700 he makes on every iphone compared with the $20 per device that Google gets to license their OS. I'm surprised that Apple's bank balance manages to stay in the black.

On the other hand if Google hadn't fluffed the Nexus One launch and allowed HTC to fill the gap with the Desire (which is why I've got one) then the story would be slightly different.

ha ha you would think Apple would have learned its lessons from the 80's. Its history repeating itself all over again.

The iPhone is being sold in and exclusive carrier contract. I'm sure if everyone out there were selling them Apple couldn't keep up with production. Oh... they can't keep up now. I'm sure Jobs is not worried.

When I scanned this article I fully got the impression that the author believes that the Android OS will become top dog one day.

Maybe it deserves to, I don't know enough about it. The iPhone comes across as pretty slick but the Android phones come across as more functional or versatile... with cheaper apps. Can you get one with a better resolution yet?

Apple never learns and is as restrictive as they have ever been.
