Hi, we are getting the disk read error and already took apart the xbox to fix the problem with help from youtube. It worked for about two weeks but now it won't read the disks again. Is there any way to bypass the problem by connecting an external dvd which will allow the machine to read the disks and allow the kids to play their games?
Thanks,
motherof5

Hello motherof5,
We will need more info of how you "fixed" the Xbox 360 in order to make more sense of your current situation. Did you specifically just tried to fix the DVD drive itself or did you tamper with any other area of the console?
And no, you cannot connect an external drive and let the Xbox 360 read games from that. If your current DVD drive is beyond being able to be fixed then another option is to either replace the laser or purchase a replacement DVD drive of the same model.

I'm sure we'd love to help you sort this out. You might want to let us know what brand/model of DVD rom is inside the console, as well.
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

I did not know that those drives can actually read the games. I thought it was just for ripping heh.

It cannot play backups. It's a DVD drive only. Did you even read it?

It does play games, it takes the place of your primary drive and you can switch between that and your internal, you stick a xbox dvd drive in it flashed / spoofed with the correct key and you can play games with it.
Originally posted by teamxecuter: you may want to keep your internal drive as stock and untouched and have your external unit freely available to do with as you please;
@Motherof5, you still there? You ask for our help, have someone offer to give you a free replacement and don't even have the courtesy to reply???
