Hi,

I have an .mkv file which I am trying to play via PS3.

I do this relatively often with various .mkv files, and usually use tsMuxeR to convert the .mkv file to an .m2ts file, before streaming to PS3.

However, on this occasion, when trying to use tsMuxeR to convert to .m2ts, I get the following error message: Matroska parse error: invalid H264 NAL unit size. NAL unit truncated.

I have no idea what this means or what to do.

I have tried using PS3 Media Server?s built-in MEncoder to convert the .mkv file on the fly, however this also does not work. Same with mkv2vob.

I have read that if the .mkv file was created using MKVToolNix 4.2.0, tsMuxeR seems to have problems dealing with the file. Unfortunately, I do not know what program was used to create the .mkv file.

Assuming this is the reason I cannot play this .mkv file, what program do I use to play this .mkv file via PS3? Or how do I convert this file into a format that the PS3 will accept?

Thanks in advance,

AKS.

It sounds like a corrupt file.

The quick-n-dirty way would be to use VLC...it seems to chew on just about anything you feed it, and it will spit out whatever you ask it for. The built-in converter isn't cinema quality...but it sure is easy to use, and it does not seem to mind file errors.

I dunno... I always seem to have some sort of issue or another with VLC. But that's me. Killer's right, it does handle almost everything you throw at it.

Here's what Wikipedia has to say on NAL units, if you're interested:

"The coded video data is organized into NAL units, each of which is effectively a packet that contains an integer number of bytes. The first byte of each NAL unit is a header byte that contains an indication of the type of data in the NAL unit, and the remaining bytes contain payload data of the type indicated by the header. The NAL unit structure definition specifies a generic format for use in both packet-oriented and bitstream-oriented transport systems, and a series of NAL units generated by an encoder is referred to as a NAL unit stream."

That's mostly Ancient Mayan to me, so I suppose another thing you could do is try to demux it using the latest mkvtoolnix/MKVExtractGUI. Since it has something to do with the video, you could run the corrupt file through another encode process to try and get it working. Dunno, it may work for you, it may not. Just note that encoding usually takes a fairly long time. (With a Pentium 4 processor, it took me... about a day and a half, if I remember correctly, to re-encode a 720p 2-hour movie.)

Thanks guys for your responses.

I can play the file in VLC on PC, but as far as I am aware, I cannot get VLC on the PS3 unless I install Linux (which I can't do as I have the latest PS3 firmware).

I have demuxed the file to h.264 and AC3, then used tsMuxeR to convert to .m2ts. When I stream this using PS3 Media Server, it plays the video fine, but with no audio.

It seems that I am halfway there having sorted the video. Any ideas to get the audio working?

Thanks for your help.

VLC has a built-in converter feature (Media>Convert/Save) - it works on almost any file that will play with VLC.

Thanks, but what format should I convert the AC3 audio to using this feature on VLC?

And once I have done that, how do I put the audio and video together for the PS3 to play? Will tsMuxeR handle this new (converted) audio file?

Thanks again.

Hi, I too am having this problem. You can fix this without knowing about NAL, if the cause of your problem is in fact the version of MKVtoolnix, because it was for me. I muxed all sorts of movies in mkvtoolnix version 3.0, and then sent these through mkv2vob to view on playstation. I was stupid enough to think that an upgrade might actually be a good thing, so I upped to 4.3 of mkvtoolnix and now I can't do anything. to check what version your mkvs are, download mkvinfo. If they are in fact 4.2 (or later for sure, but not sure how far past 3.0), then use an older version of mkvmerge to create a new mkv. you should be able to drag your problematic mkv into the mkvmerge gui, remux it into a practically identical mkv, and then continue as planned in tsMuxer or mkv2vob or whatever your choice may be. I hope this helps.

Download mkvtoolnix 3.0, this contains mkvmerge to make your new mkv as well well mkvinfo to check the version of your problem mkv. http://filepig.org/categories/3/620/1059...3.0.0-setup.exe if that link doesnt work try http://filepig.org/download/mkvtoolnix/ and you should be able to navigate from there.

good luck!
