I recently picked up a first-gen Xenon box from my friend. It had the old RROD, and he told me if I could fix it, I could keep it. RROD fix was pretty simple (replacing X-clamps with machine screws and washers), but then I decided to get a little tricky. I added an additional fan, mounted where the hard drive usually rests, and spliced it into the internal fan (the Xenon used the 4-pin connector, I connected to two of those). It worked like a charm for a few weeks, but just the other day, the terminal I'd spliced the new fan onto shorted out. That means my external fan and one of my internal fans are no longer spinning, leading, as you'd expect, to overheating.
My question is, what's the best method for getting the internal fan back up and running? My initial thought was to splice the two fans together to work off the same pins and run the external off USB. But could my additional fan have contributed to the short in the first place? And would it be wise to run both internal fans off one set of pins?
This is the first 360 I've opened up, let alone performed any modification to (I didn't even buy one for myself until late last year), but even I can see that cooling is a major concern. To me, fan noise is a minor complaint so long as I keep the inside cool.
It should also be noted that I'm aiming to keep this project as cheap and easy as possible. I don't expect to win any awards, I just want a spare Xbox for Netflix and the occasional game of COD.
