Ps3 new laser but still can't read cd's

I have a 60 gb launch ps3 with firmware 3.41. about a month ago it stopped reading cd's and dvd's, but continued to play blu-rays, so i ordered a new laser from ebay. I just installed the laser and the blu-rays (and ps3 games) work fine. Ps2 games and dvd movies also work fine. but it won't read any of my ps1 games or music cd's. the icon just keeps spinning. I even went and did a backup, format, and restore but that did nothing. I know the older ps3's like mine use 2 separate lasers (one for blu-ray and one for dvd/cd) but has anyone else encountered this problem? or have any idea's on how to fix it?
