Must admit, it was funny. I was a noob not too long ago ... I hope I didn't sound that bad.
Quote: memory is 2x32700 400ddr dual branded kingston
I tried a computer with ddr ram, even upgraded to 2GB of DDR Ram, and it didn't match 512MB of Rambus RAM. And not to knock ddr ram, but I think Rambus is better. And be more specific 2x... could mean 256total.

I've been burning and ripping DVD's for over a year, tried all sorts of free and (shudder) pay for programs, but, when I want perfect quality and ease of use, I keep coming back to the place I started . That being, the various versions of X-Copy Xpress that 321 has put out. Fact is, I wanted to see what all the fuss was about with the DVD, "Return of the Kings" so I timed the duplication process about an hour ago.
Using the RF version of the "Platinum Version" in conjunction with DVD43 and the "bouducon.dll" from the original version, it took 32 Minutes to read the disk to file, and 28 minutes to write it back clean. Absolutely NO LOSS of quality (picture or sound) on the duplicated version; none!
Personally, I can't see any reason for any other tools for the foreseeable future. Although, I really, really like DVD Decrypter for picking out the files that I really want when I make short versions. I have a couple of "Mad Dog" 8X burners that work like champs on even crappy media, but since there's a Tiger Direct outlet store about 10 minutes from the house, I can get the good stuff for $14.00 per 25 pack. That does help....

I'm curious could you run Nero infotool or some other Disc identifier and post the manufacturer's ID number. I would like to know what you are getting for $.60 a disc. I'm always looking for better deals.

The company is (KHypermedia) and they put out both -R and +R disks. I'll run the Nero ID just to be sure though. Hang on while I dual task this puppy.
Yup, that's about all I get. If you want the specs, try http://www.KHypermedia.com/ It's just a general purpose single layer (version 5) disk 4.7GB at 4X. I have been using them for the last 6 months with no problems noted.

Ugh, I've heard bad things about those puppies. smsmike, You can get ritekG04's at Meritline for .69-.71 ea. About a thin dime more than what you're paying. That's with free shipping. You're discs may be fine now, but how about 4-5 years down the line? Verbatim and ritek seem to be the preferred choice, but each to his own...

At one point or another I have heard "Bad Things" about every darn disk on the market. It's a matter of "Which" bad thing you actually believe. Since KHypermedia also puts out a full line of burners for both CD and DVD, I have serious doubts that they are selling less than industry standard disks. Of course, I drive a Ford Truck, so I might not be the one to ask!!
If you want to compare prices, try this link http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=172510&Sku=K51-1044

If I ruffled your feathers, didn't mean to, I apologize. But if you read thru the forum you will see that ritek and verbatim are the overwhelming choice for media. Like I said each to his own. I also have a Ford truck. PS- I checked your link, I like Sophocles, am always looking for a better deal. Unfortunately they do not carry Ritek

I agree with bigorange, I think that Hypermedia's discs are made by CMC and not a good sign, often they aren't given an ID number at all. I also like Ritek Go3 and Go4 media. I'm using Verbatim 4X+R which are made by Mitusubishi ID# MCC 002, but you have to keep an eye on Verbatim too because they've used CNC to manufacture their media before. I also like media made by Ricoh.

Hey Sophocles, I was using dvdinfo on some TDK's I had purchased quite some time ago and guess what? Yep, manufactured by Mitsibishi. Wonder if it was just that particular batch or if they all are.

bigorangeI'm going for that particular batch, but the next batch could be made by someone that doesn't make good media. Verbatim released a series of 4X dics that were made by CMC which makes princo look good and now they could be made by Ricoh or Mitsubishi which is for now good. TDK was at the top of their game when it came to cassette tape, but they farm out their DVD media. When it comes to non manufacturers you can't be sure of who makes it or what you're getting without testing it.

After 30 years in the Air Force, a discussion about DVD disks is NOT about to "Ruffle" much of anything on my old hide. I do, however, have a question. Someone mentioned a manufacturers ID. My copy of Nero is the OEM version that came with my "Mad Dog" 8X burner. The DVD Info tools doesn't display any type of Manufacturers Code when it identifies the disk. It just gives general information about it. The only code on the disk itself is printed on the center of the core and it says, "MAD663.A270408.7 (if that means anything)
Anyway, the disks are much stronger at the center than the Magnavox or Verbatim DVD's that I was buying, but at less than half the price. They even LOOK like higher quality. They also carry a "Written" Lifetime Warranty on the spindle - so I can't really complain too much. At the age of 65, they will more than likely out last me, so unless someone plans to bitch at my grave side, I'll stick with the devil I know. (LARGE GRIN)!!

These suckers are quite old, it was when I first got into it. There may not be anymore like 'em. I had followed the line of reasoning that if great for audio, must be good for video. I have since learned the errors of my ways but rest assured I'm going to use 'em now.

smsmike I'd hang on to that receipt, you just might get a chance to use it. Go to this site and download the free version of DVD Info Pro. An advertisement is included with the free version but no spyware. I think you're given the choice during installation to pay and register or accept a banner ad.

Ok, now I AM confused!
The program works great (thanks)! I have learned a bunch of things about my drives that I didn't know. However, the disks are a totally different story.
Three stacks of the same brand of disks, bought about 6 months apart.
The oldest stack (ALL of them areKHypermedia brand) says it's (Ritek G03). The last batch (last week) says it's (GSC 001) and the middle batch from a month or so ago says it's (CMC MAG.AF1) SOooooooo fellow rippers, what in the name of all things un-holy is going on?
Anyway, for what it's worth, I have burned over 300 of these suckers and have not had a bad burn yet. Fingers crossed and keep on trucking...

mike, that's the problem with a lot of media, they don't make their own, they farm it out. You might get ritek one time and memorex the next or who knows what( as was the case with the TDK's I was refering to earlier). Also what I was trying to say , a lot of this media doesn't have a long shelf life. I think verbatim is guaranteed for 100 years, I'll let ya know in about 98. I've already had media that started screwing up after only 6 months! So, even tho they may work perfectly now, down the road you may have nada. Thus the reason I reccommended Ritek and Verbatim. Good luck....

Some DVD media outlets change manufacturers like Jennifer Lopez changes husbands. The Ritek batch is a reliable batch, you've alerdy read my opinion of CMC and the other is an unkown to me but perhaps someone else will ID it for you. Your best bet would be to do what bigorange suggested earlier and try to find some good prices on G03 or G04 Ritek media. It isn't worth it to occassionally get good media and the rest of the time get an unknow quality. I would however like to thank you for your effort.

Sorry to go off subject. I'm hearing all of your burn times total times. I can get the burn time down to 13 min but the trans-coding time is like 30 to 40 min I just went and got a 160 GB hard drive and another stick of memory so I have 512. I have used Shrink/decrypter/Clonedvd2/anydvd.Xcopy Platinum & Express. I'm running XP home its set to DMA. My processer is a 1.10 Thats probley my problem riight? Is there anything I can do or use to make it go faster. Thanks for your help.

xbadboy2,
Your times are right up with mine. My dell is a pretty good system and start to finish is around 45-50 min, using 2.4x media.

To: xbadboy2;
My times vary from disk to disk, but the average is about 35 minutes to put the code "cleanly" on to the Hard Drive. After that, the burn time depends upon what program I am forced to use. If the program runs 6 or 7 Gb, it requires compression, so, I use one of the routines from 321 studio. This adds a "Second" read time to the burn. If the program is within the 4 to 4.3 Gb range, then Nero can deal with it and it's a FAST and straight burn to disk.
All in all, your times sound about right. I run a fairly fast system. AMD XP-2700 at 2.16 Gh with 512 mb of DDR Memory. Sometimes I even run "SETI at home" during both the read and write process, but even that extra tasking on the CPU makes very little difference to the read/write times required. Your system sounds just fine to me.

My times are more like 20-30 minutes. AnyDVD with DVDcopy2, ripped with Samsung SM-352 combo drive, burned with a Plextor PX-712A DVD burner using MCC 002 media. My best backups are however with DVDrebuilder/CCE basic and that takes over 3 hours.
