hey guys, I recently fixed an RROD console using heatgun & x-clamp fix (secondary code was 0022). The system now boots up (I get the green lights starting at quadrant 1 and rolling through to 4) but displays an E79 error on screen, with lower right quad flashing 1 red light.

The E79 is supposidly related to a hard drive malfunction.... however I have NO hard drive connected at the moment... I've visually checked the hard drive connector attached to the xbox, and it seems like its in good condition (no bent pins).

Any advice would be helpful, thanks!

E68 is a hard drive issue, not E79. If this isn't a jtag, I've never heard of E79 otherwise. Usually related to a corrupted Nand.

Also, possibly the JTAG wires could be shorting on something. Make sure those wires are not grounding on anything.

nope not a jtag system.... I did get it to boot once by holding down the sync button as I booted it, and was able to check dashboard revision (8455 I believe) but it froze before I could even get a game in it...

secondary code while showing E79 was 1013.. which was listed as a dashboard update error... so thats when I held down the sync and booted, and got it to the dash..

my guess is this system's nand must have been corrupted during a system update.

If you can get it to boot, try putting in a newer game that has a newer dash on it. Or download the dash update and install it.

As Modking30 suggested, I have been able to get rid of the e79 error by updating the firmware to the newest revision via USB flash drive. I've also had the e79 error while using a failed hard drive but the problem disappeared as soon as I removed the hard drive form the system.

"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

the system is sitting in its cage right now, no accessories connected. I've tweaked my xclamp fix, and I'm getting it to consistantly boot now (not red ringing randomly anymore, and no E79 error) however it is still freezing up within a minute or two, sometimes I get get to the dash, and scroll through no probs, other times it freezes at the Xbox 360 globe spinning up, sometimes it boots, then shows E71 error with 1 red light flashing...

I've tried updating to the newest dash via usb, but it doesn't recognize it when its plugged in? I got it once to show the update, but during the update it failed, and I haven't been able to get it to start the update again w/the usb plugged in. I don't have any (original) newer disks to get the update from at the moment, but the 9199 update was downloaded right from the MS website, and I don't understand why it won't update...

E71 is dashboard update error. If your USB isnt working try modding the drive and putting a newer game in
