New Droid 2 ad taunts the iPhone

article published on 6 September, 2010

Motorola's latest ad, promoting the Droid 2, has taunted the Apple iPhone, playing on the company's "there's an app for that" ad lineup. The Droid 2 ad is simple, asking the question: "Flash websites? There's a phone for that." Motorola's full-page ad was seen in newspapers over the weekend. Continues the ad: "Flash sites require Flash capabilities. Seemed pretty simple to us." ... [ read the full article ]

Meh.

"It?s as if McGruff the Crime Dog snuck into our basement, enlisted an army of cellar rats to eat up all of our cheese, and then burned the house down when we finally locked him out ? instead of just knocking on the front door to tell us the window was open." ~Revision3 CEO Jim Louderback

If you're going to hit. Hit hard, and make it count. Well played Motorola, that's going to hurt. Truth be told the iPhone is a great iTouch and a so-so phone. Motorola basically invented the modern day cell phone, and Android improved the cell phone OS. Together it makes for an amazing phone. Really the only advantage the iPhone has is iTunes to manage content. If Google were smart they'd make an Android management software and in one swift move they would crush the iPhone.

Exactly As soon a Google comes up an all in one AV, app, and firmware update software. I believe they will eventually take over. The iPod touch with a crappy phone add on.

What? Why would they want something like that? It sounds almost as bad as itunes (except it would work with windows if it was made by google). You do everything right through the phone on Android; no need for PC apps at all. If you are talking about the music side of iTunes, google phones come with Amazon MP3, something which I prefer to iTunes, if I were willing to pay for lossy music that is.

Every day more and more Apple, Blackberry, and Palm users are coming to android...the device selection means there is a phone for everyone on just about every network. Apple has a serious problem...AT&T and their bandwidth caps. Ignoring the fact that the iPhone does not support flash, and that AT&T's 3G network is too slow for it anyway, you still would not be able to use video for fear of overages. They have another problem...a problem faced by Palm and RIM as well...the hardware. Google does not need to design the latest, greatest phone...they let other companies design a wide selection of phones...some are flops, some are hits...and the market is saturated in almost every area, and for every network. Then, there is the problem of the software...I honestly think that if Apple wanted to, they could fix the biggest problems with iOS, but they choose not to. Their device will be outdated by next summer (it is already outdated by Android hardware standards), yet it is designed to only support web video from 2020? Who will still be using an iPhone4 in 2020? It is like building a car that only runs on ethanol...it might be a better fuel in the future, but right now it costs more per mile to run, and the stations are so infrequent that you can't get from one station to the next on a tank of ethanol. This is why they make cars that run on Gasoline, Ethanol, or any mix of the two.

For me, the two biggest draws of the Android platform are Flash support and the ability to install 3rd-party software w/having to root your phone. Apple simply fails st both.
