hey all been awhile since i been here but youve always helped in the past.. hoping you can help now.. as the title states my ps3 no longer recognizes the bluray drive as being there. with some googling and searching and checking out my mobo ive found the problem to be related to ic chip 4943b located along the usb side edge approx 2 inches to the left of the usb slots.

before i go any further i should prolly state this is a 60gb launch ps3 which ylod and i used the gilsky method to reflow. now before i hear go buy a slim or anything like that let it be known i like to tinker. and when sony told me to send them $177 +tax and my ps3 i said sure send me the email.. but in my mind i said go "bone" yourself "jared" (the reps name)... why send you 200 for a 90 day warranty when i could go buy a slim for 300...

i already assume it may of had something to do with the reflow being as the reflow went well the ps3 booted up after the process and the drive was working properly. although the next morning when i turned it on for the second time after the reflow i heard "pop" smelled the worst smell any person can associate with their electronics and saw the dreaded smoke. since then the br-d dont work.

all that being said i found the ic chips for $2.81 and my soldering skills are up to par to replace this ic. what im mostly looking for from this post is just some feedback or advice on why it may of blown out in the first place. aswell as any other ideas before i replace the ic and it may blow again. could there of been any other reason anyone can think of as to why it happened to go at this time. or why they normally blow out even if a reflow hasnt been done.

just trying to save a headache before it happens..

thanks in advance..

i guess i should give an update. for now i can only give good news.. but only time will tell.. sure enough it was the bad ic chip on the board causing the problem. i was able to order the chip from mouser for $2.81. i ordered two incase i screwed up one. the good news first of all is i successfully replaced the ic on the board on the first try. so i still have one spare just incase there still happens to be a short somewhere that will burn this one out. so i did the soldering earlier this week and finally got the nerve to put it back together tonight. ps3 booted right up.. and the system recognized the game in the drive. i was able to remove the game thankfully and now comes the waiting part. when i put it back together after the reflow it booted fine first night and read brdrive. it wasnt until the next morning that the short happened.. so cross your fingers and wish me luck.. hope this helps anyone else out there who happens to get a problem like this..

on a side note... since this happened a few weeks ago.. system still at 3.41... contemplating whether i wanna keep it or just go ahead and upgrade.. guess thatll depend on how bad i wanna play it and if the new ic holds out....
