Hello. I recently got an seagate 1tb ST310005EXD101-RK external hard drive. It came formatted with ntfs. I used Gparted (linux program) to format it as one big fat32 hard disk, but the ps3 still does not read it. Nothing, at all! It doesn't even show up in the xmb. I did some googling and i found that other people had problem with this perticular model. So if there is no way i can fix it could you please tell me an externall hard drive that it sure to work! At a reasonable price ;) Thanks. :)

Can't you just format it under windows?

Like Igmutaka said, just use windows to format it and I woyld suggest plugging it in the same port you used for the jailbreak.

I'm not sure he has windows...if he did, he would have formatted it like that.

The drive probably needs a low-level format to remove seagate's drive management software...then setup the partition again and format with fat32, 256 byte.

Well you are half right on that one, you can format drives in fat32 over 32GB if your doing a windows xp installation but other than that yes you should be able to format fto fat32 in windows but I'm not sure if windows xp also limits this in the operating system as well. You can also just this program here a try This here should work and be pretty easy to use, it was a free program and now a paid program but I thats the link for an old paid version.

but the problem is it is formatted to fat 32. I formatted it 2 times (originally came with NTFS) any ideas. If not ill go to the store and see if i can return it or at least get another hard drive. Could you recomend one that is 100% compatible with the ps3

IT worked. Swissknife is a crappy program, used disk utility in ubuntu. The problem was that, yes i did format it to fat 32, but as a guid, not as a master boot recored. ie the partition type should be FAT32 (LBA) (0x0c) :) Thanks for all the help everyone, this is why i love afterdawn.

Well, I would've come in to save the day by suggesting Ubuntu, but it seems you already beat me to it yourself.

Ubuntu (and most Linux distros, for that matter)'s disk management is probably the easiest and most efficient way to format any size drive/partition from anything to anything. I've tried using all those Windows solutions, and they all quite frankly suck like a vacuum. I'm not sure exactly why MS decided to make it so hard - maybe another proprietary thing, them pushing NTFS on the masses - but formatting on any version of Windows is so frustrating that I just pop in my old copy of Ubuntu Live CD and format the drive from there.

Why not just use fat32format? It is the best I have tried; way better than that HP tool.
