i have lost 99% of the cable channels on my starview box(still receiving sky sports 1,2,3,4 and few others), but for how long dont really know.I am in NW.
Can anyone plz recommend a good cheap box replacement for cable HD and possibly for sat HD as well.
Do these replacement boxes come with the software and simply plug and go, as i have no idea how to download/update.

look at the starview cable and sat combo, the cable side last for approx a year when connected, but the sat side can be used as FTA or you can load CCAM to it for connecting to a server, you will have to load firmware as all boxs come as is, but there are tuts on here to show you how to do that, so I suggest you read up on it and also use the search function above and search for posts on the Starview Combo
