Okay guys, I would really appreciate some help here. Here is the problme that I'm having.

I have fixed xbox's for a while now. But the only issues I've fixed was the "open tray" error. Where you switch the drives and the boards in the drive ect. But I was recently given an original xbox 360 with the 3 flashing red lights. The xbox is an Arcade edition, and it's an older model without the HDMI support.

The first thing I did when I got it home, was I hooked it up. Sure enough, 3 red flashing lights. But there was no picture on my TV screen. It was as if there was nothing plugged into my Tv. So I just assumed that it was because of the 3 red lights. I had never had this issue, so I didn't know.

Well, I ordered the Xclamp fix from the net.

I took the xbox apart, and I did the fix exactly like all the videos on youtube instructed. I did the 20 minute overheat and cooldown. But I still have the 3 red lights and theres still no video on scren, no sound either, forgot to mention that earlier.

So, any ideas? Anyone think it's still fixable?

a good place to start would be the secondary code, that would help narrow down what is causing the 3 red lights, you achieve this by holding down the sync button and pushing the eject button at the same time push and release the eject while holding the sync and record the 4 digit error code. 4 flashing lights = 0 3=3 2=2 1=1 once you get the 4 digit code post it and we will start from there. there are a lot of things that can cause 3 flashing lights, the xclamp fix will only help solve a few of them. if you are lucky enough to have one that that will solve your problem it may be as simple as the tension that you have on the screws. meanwhile try tightening and loosing a little and see if that helps.

0020 Thank you for taking the time to try to help. I didn't know there was a way to tell the error code without the video working. So thank you for the information also.

that is the cpu or gpu i would say you have the screws to tight, how fast does it go 3 red lights? if there is very little pause that is the case, loosen the screws a little and make sure you have the plastic washers next to the board. you may try overheating again sometimes that trick takes a couple of tries.

Man see, that's a great example of why I love these forums. It worked like a charm bro. I hope it stays fixed lol.. It took me a few tries, losening and tightening. But I just got it to work. I had to loosen them a good bit, I guess I had them way too tight.

Thank you again bro, now I know how to fix the problem in the future.

PS. The screws that came with this kit are really bulky. So much to the point that they dont allow my board to sit flat inside the case. Will that cause issues in the future?

that fix wont last long at all. i give it a week at most. what you need is a reflow or reball to solve the real issues that caused the RROD to begin with.

Come talk with us on efnet at #elitemods !!! or just click ME

if you tightened down the screws too much to begin with, you might have crushed the solder balls under the gpu... and like wabashman said, it won't last long.

I've replaced a few xclamps with screws, and typically I would drill out the small holes in the case with a 3/8ths bit to allow for the heads of the screws to sit without touching the case... this also allows for easier adjustments in the future without having to remove the entire board from the chasis....

but you should really look into getting it reflowed, or at least try wooly's heatgun method to ensure a longer lasting system.

Three red lights is tough to fix and always comes back. You should have just sent it to Microsoft for repair. Xclamp is the dumbest way to fix this. Reflow or reball is the only perm. fix.

As I said, this is one of the first generations of the xbox. It was made in like 2006 I believe. So Sending it back to Microsoft wasn't an option. They would have charged me to repair it, and I would have had to pay like 150.00 bucks. Why pay them to fix a console that was given to me for free? I figured that for 15.00 I would buy the kit and give fixing it a try. If I couldn't fix it, I would be out 15.00, which isn't bad. But if I could fix it, then I would have a back-up console in case mine goes down in the future.

I have read online from people saying their xclamped consoles still working over a year after repair. So maybe if this one if kept in a cool location, where it can breath, it will last a while too. Oh well, only time will tell. I hope the fix lasts. I fired it up last night and played halo on it for a good 3 hours and it ran very quiet and didnt really get hot. We will see I guess, since it's one of the first models it's more likely to have issues anyways I'm sure.

wabashman U.S. (and I possibly jpizzle Canada) do reflows. That's your cheapest way to get a permanent fix.
