Would like to store my dvd library on external hardrive to playback through xbox 360 usb port. I have ripped my dvds to vob files on my computer hdd using dvdfab. What format would be best to use as far as video quality and allow me to keep the surround sound encoding. Any software suggestions would be helpful.

I use divx/xvid (avi). I'm not much of a video snob, but if your using dvd format instead of BD, my guess is that you aren't much either. I have rips anywhere from 1.5 GB up to 3 GB and they look great on my 47" LCD on my xbox (RGB plugs) or PS3 (HDMI) (ps3 is better IMO - think it's because of the up scaling and/or HDMI, I'm not sure).

I'd try a few formats and play around with the settings and decide what i like better.
