Which provides better quality backups? Nero or DVDXcopy platinum?
Is nero more difficult to use?

I have XCopy Platinum, DVDCloner2, Nero, DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. I've noticed no differnce in quality. Now what do you want? Easy one click app? Platinum used to be $130, but I'm sure you can find it a lil cheaper now, DVDCloner2 is $60. Nero is a great program, and can be used to do much more than just dvd backups and runs around $70. And last DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are free.

he..he I kind of went off topic. So quality no difference I've seen. Platinum is one click, and Nero just takes a lil bit of learning.

soulsling, me again, I've got both-no difference in quality, no difference in difficulty. I prefer Nero, as you can tell by my threads, way so much stuff under one roof, all of it good. Hey flip, Nero 6, 49.00 -59.00 depending where you look( bought mine for $59, saw it later for $49, just my luck!)

I just bought the Nero 6 Ultra disc for $50 from here:

I've since read some horrible reviews of them apparently selling pirated software so I guess I got lucky :)

chumDVD, thanks but I already have it. Was bummed because instead of searching for it, I just bought a serial key off aheads website for $69. Mostly because I would know I got the full version and the retail price was $99(who needs a box for $30)
Also the thought was nice (sending it to me), but piracy isn't condoned here.

I to made the mistake of getting the serial for the Nero download. Started out with the trialware and got a serial. Then needed another serial to open the Recode2. Then needed another serial to record 5.1 Dolby (default is Dolby stereo). And then I needed another serial to open...just kidding.
As to the original question, both DVDXCopy Platinum and Nero Give excellent results. Nero needs a ripper. The earlier retail versions of Platinum are a complete package. Platinum does have a problem with software interference. Programs like Roxio, Nero's InCD and even some anti-virus software can be problematic, and the list goes on... InCD in the Nero pack can be a problem. A lot of people don't load that part of the Nero suite. As far as doing a lot of things well; Nero is the winner.
The price is down drasticly since 321 quit selling the Platinum program and lost their court case (if you can still find a copy). Since 321 lost the case in court, it seems they stopped support of some programs with the ripper. So, programs needing to be activated can be a problem. When getting Nero one has to be sure to get the complete package with the Recode2. The Ultra Platinum is the pack with the Recode2.
Platinum and Recode both do Movie Only with menus. Platinum has the Xpress which is the 'one button' recorder and an advanced section for editing. Nero Recode2 is easy, but not as easy as the Platinum Xpress. Remember with Nero you will need a ripper. You either have to purchase one or use one of the freebies. The later RF version of Platinum didn't have a ripper.
I have found that Nero Recode2 runs as fast or faster with the files ripped to HD as with a background ripper like DVD43 or AnyDVD. Skeptics should run a time test before they disagree. The initial rip is time consuming, but analysis and encoding are so much faster from the HD than a disc drive. Less wear and tear on the disc drive and fewer problems than recording on the fly are some added benefits. This last was a little off track, but pertains to working with Nero.

brobear, on the fly runs about 45 minutes to an hour on a normal movie(12/2 to 2 hrs.) for me. will agree tho, less wear and tear.

Was that with the deep analysis on? I usually use the more time consuming process as it gives better video quality. For a 7GB disc, I get something near 40 min for deep analysis and 40 min for encoding. I know I could cut the time by eliminating the deep analysis. I am also using deep analysis on the HD files. So I didn't manipulate any times, same method used for both tests. I would guess the times would be proportional for shorter movies. For my results, the deep analysis from the HD and encoding took 26 min for both. Added to the 40 min rip time, I got 1hr6min. On the fly deep analysis and encoding took 1hr20min.

brobear, if you're referring to "advanced analysis", then yes, I always use that in recode. I spend the extra time to get the better pic. If you're referring to "deep analysis", I never use that in shrink, but since that goes to the HD, you must be talking about advanced analysis. Usually it's 1-2 min. to analyze when I first open recode, then after my settings are finished,25-35 min. in advanced analysis,then another another 20-25 min. to burn.

Since the author of DVD Shrink now works for Nero its not surprising that they share some traits in common. Advanced analysis and deep analysis essentially comes from the same origins.

Actually I was just giving brobear a little sheeat, I'm pretty sure he realized this. But I didn't realize the same author now works for nero. I do think nero's recode advanced is necessary, while shrink's deep isn't.
