Ok

The system is flashed and it makes sound like airplane is about to take off.. Really loud noise and then screen goes black and 2 flashing red lights

I searched the web and most likely it is overheating issue

The problem is that console is not even WARM

So I took it to local repair shop and they said the heat sink, gpu and CPU needs to be replaced

Quote is $90

Is it worth it guys?

I mean I can get used Xbox for around 80 dollars ( not sure if it can be modded tho)

I mean... 90 is way too much but I can't give up on joy of running blank DVDs

Give me some of your thoughts

The shop is full of it! It would cost much more than that to replace the CPU, GPU, and heatsinks. Only the CPU causes the 2 RROD. There's a trace on the motherboard that you can cut to make the 360 work again (if you're sure that the 360 is not running hot!). It's the temperature trace. I've had to do this on a few stubborn RROD boxes. Sometimes the sensor goes bad and causes this and cutting this trace fixes the problem. Keep in mind that in most cases, the CPU is overheating, so make sure to hand check the CPU heatsink. If you can hold your hand on top of it without burning the Hell out of yourself, then this fix should work for you.

Here is a link with a picture of the trace to cut:

You could just clean off the crap thermal paste that microsoft uses and replace it with some good silver-based thermal paste (Arctic Silver). That'll stop your overheating and only costs $7 or so for a tube

You can even start off by opening up the box and cleaning the fans and vents out...removing dust and debris from the board with compressed air. That's all it takes sometimes, obstructed air flow kills computers (and xbox 360s) However, thanks for that link BillB...some more ammunition for my anti-RROD weaponry.

"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

You could get a reball done for about $90, but why? You can get a new system for $150

Just this week, I fixed the two red lights on mine. I got a RROD kit from Ebay for $10 and replaced the heat sink paste (As mentioned above). It works fine, now.

Anyway, is the $90 worth it? No. But, replacing the paste and fixing the two red lights isn't tough and is worth it.

Update: the two red flashing light console I fixed has developed e74 error. So, now I'm going to try the "Wooly Heat Gun Procedure," (Yes, they are nice Converses, Wooly) to try to reflow the solder.

My point is, you may want to do the heat gun treatment as well before reassembling your console.

overheating can be caused by solder balls touching each other under a ram chip the cpu or the gpu, as modking said you are pissing good money after bad if you repair this xbox, buy a new one a get it flashed. since the price of xbox's has gone down when i get a red light issue in one i take the drive out and throw the box in the trash.

This is the exact reason I don't reflow for customers anymore. Unlike every user I owned a true reflow station, not a stupid heatgun. I made good money, but ended up getting rid of it, because it's too much work for the amount people want to pay. I had the same station wash. had.

yeah i have a reball station setup it takes hours to do each chip and if you do not do them all you will have more troubles later, plus reflowing the board which i do while all the chips are removed, then put everything back and at best somebody wants to pay 40 bucks its just not worth it anymore.
