Ofcom tells BT to open fibre network to rivals

article published on 7 October, 2010

UK communications regulator Ofcom is now requiring BT to provide competitors with access to its fibre network. Ofcom believes the move will promote the take-up of high-speed broadband services throughout the UK. BT also has to give rivals access to its underground ducts and telegraph poles to build their own fibre networks. This really is sad...2mbps by 2015? 3G can do that in a bad signal area...on a cell phone that is traveling at 80MPH! How is it that such a tiny country can't even blanket itself in 3G?

Well, in Ireland we have about the same situation as the UK at the moment. In cities and towns etc. you can get 3G that will give you 3.5Mbit or so easily enough but you don't have to venture too far into rural territory to lose it completely. Some people live so far out that they can't get anything, which is a sad state of affairs and for companies like eircom in ireland, or BT in the UK to even get DSL line to them, it could take considerable investment for only a few customers.

3G I think is pretty poor for Internet anyway, and a WiMAX alternative in Ireland is getting considerable criticism. Roll on LTE :-)
