Hello,
I have been reading that the PS3 was jailbreakable a month or so back. Since then I have been keen to get myself one and today out of the blue a big electronic store had a sale on PS3 and I just picked up one for the hell of it... without even actually knowing anything about the PS3 jailbreak scene. Maybe a bit naive of me to buy one without doing the proper research before I bought it but its a bit too late for that now. So here I am gathering the knowledge I need and using this thread for any issues I come across while getting this shit done. I did this before when trying to get my PS3 bricked and I didn't get flamed for it so I suppose I won't this time either.
First of all, I apologize before hand if I ask questions that may, or may not have been asked before. I will try to use the search function to the best of my ability.
Now on with the matter at hand:
Question 1: I am gonna buy a Olimex AVR-USB-162 (probably in a few hours). Is that a bad idea? Is maybe PS3break USB drive better?
Question 2: I bought a PS3 Slim 120GB. It is currently running version 3.30. It asks me to update to 3.50 but I haven't done it yet since I am not sure I can jailbreak it with the latest update. Can anybody confirm if any of the 2 firmware versions mentioned above are okay for a jailbreak? Also if I update to 3.5. Can I reverse back to 3.3?
Question 3: The jailbreak guide (This one) I have read for Olimex AVR-USB-162 says I need firmware 3.41 to do the trick. I did find a 3.41 update file but I would need some sort of a guide on how to use the file to update my ps3. Couldn't find anything on google. Just links me to websites selling USB jailbreak.
Sorry if this thread is long but I just wanted the bundle of questions to be easy for the eye to read and have all the information needed.
A 1 :
I've never heard of Olimex AVR-USB-162 , so I don't know . I am currently using PS3Break v1.1 from Lightake ,
yep , it works as promised .
A 2 : Don't update to 3.50 if you want to fully enjoy the PS3 . You can only Jailbreak your ps3 with firmware 3.41 or below , there is a firmware called PSFreedom supports 3.15 , other firmware only supports 3.41 .
You can't downgrade the firmware from 3.50 to 3.41 , so you'd better not upgrade it .
A 3 : Download the 3.41 update file to the usb driver . Then click update on your ps3 , just choose update from the usb driver , and it is done .
Thanks for the reply GBX_Lee.
Does the USB have to be formatted in a certain way to be readable by the PS3? Its currently not detecting the update file.
Also now that you mention PS3 Break USB. Whats the difference between v1.0 and 1.1? My country seems to have v1.0 more readily available.

The USB should be formatted in fat32, after that you must create a folder in the root of the USB called PS3 and inside that folder create another folder called UPDATE. Put the update firmware in that folder, plug the usb into your PS3 and click update via storage device and you should be good to go.
