I have said a few times on this site about the silver topped DVD meia and I think it's because I live in Canada that no one listens. We have all kinds of independent computer supply stores here in Toronto and they sell a silver topped DVD-R media called SmartMedia and it goes for about 90 cents a disk. It is as good as the Verbatims they sell in Radio Shack and everyone is using them. I can burn to the very limit of the disk's capacity and I never have any problems. I bought and burned a stack of 50 with not one loss and every disk plays beautifully.I am burning on an LG Super Multi and playing on 3 different stand alones. I am putting labels on all of them and everthing is fine. Everyone I know here who is burning uses the silver tops disks and no complaints. Hope that helps.

It would be wise to erase the bit about downloading a commercial application (CopuToDVD) on Kazaa. Pirating or a discussion about pirated software is strictly prohibited and could get you banned from the forum for life. The silver topped media is likely Ritek OEM, you verify the manufacturers code with Nero's info tool.

I am a newbie to copying DVDs. I bought 100 DVD+RW X4 silver Ritek from Meritline. They are embossed on the hub wih Ridata's logo. DiskInfoPro says they are Ricoh. I have tried about 10 disks with nary a success. They all have write failed. On some, Nero says "illegal disk." Most have to format before starting to burn. Even the format doesn't write, because trying a disk at 2.4X had to format again just after being formatted at 4X and failing to write. I have a Plextor PX-708UF. Updated firmware to 1.06 last night, but didn't give successful burn. Can burn to DVD+R just fine. Can anyone give me a clue to how to do this? Or have I just bought a large bunch of Frisbees?

If you purchased DVD+RW then you've purchased rewritable discs. What you want is DVD-R or DVD+R which are write {only} once discs. Rewritable discs work kind of like floppy's, it needs to be formatted before use and its purpose is largely for data storage. A few DVD+RWs are useful for storing old files, system backup files, online purchased software,Photos, and for practicing burning DVD's. If you want to get into burnig then choose DVD+R or DVD-R, they're less expensive and don't require formatting.

I thought that using RW disks would give me a chance to try again with them. Didn't know they weren't for copying DVDs.

You can copy DVDs to them, many of us used them for practice, but many stand alone players can't read them.
