hi,

i'm having trouble establishing a connection between my xbox 360 s and the internet. I'm using the built-in wireless reciever and attempting wireless connection through a router that has a wired connection to a modem.

when i scan for networks in: system settings -> network settings -> configure network; i find my router. I select my router and enter the security code.
Then, when I test the xbox live connection, the test fails and gives me the message:

test failed: there's a problem with your connection

when i ask for more info it says:

can't connect to your wireless network.
make sure you're connecting to the correct wireless network. etc.

I have searched online for answers and found that i may need to configure the MAC address on the router or enable game and application sharing. However, I'm having trouble accessing my router setup from my PC. On my PC I have full internet connection, but i can't access the router setup. I also can't ping my router, even when ALL firewalls are disbaled.

Another detail that may be of relevance; when i scan networks and my router appears, the signal is only one bar - even though when i have my laptop with a wireless connection in exactly the same place as the xbox 360 it has almost full bars!

can anyone help?

cheers

You need a new Router if it's giving you that much of a hassle. They're a dime a dozen on ebay. I'd recommend a Linksys or Netgear. There are many good routers out there.

Bill B: not what i want to hear, but thanks :(

coorva: thanks. i've tried getting it a little closer (although it wasn't much), but it didn't seem to do anything. I think I'll try again today; but i'm pretty sure that's not the problem because i get full bars on my laptop when it's next to the 360. I'm convinced in something to do with the router settings!
I'll let you know how it goes when i try it closer.

coorva: i tried getting it much closer but that didn't help. the connection still was showing but with only one bar, and when i selected it it still said no connection. I'm even more certain now that the problem is something to do with the router settings.

okay, the problem has been identified.

First, the poor signal on the xbox was due to settings in the router setup. I finally fixed that and got a good signal on the xbox from the router, but it still wouldn't connect...

i took it into the shop today and they tried connecting to their network with no success - verdict is that the xbox wi-fi is buggered. So, now i have to call in the xbox tech support.

faulty microsoft products....what a surprise!

thanks for your help!

I've found out what the REAL problem was now!!

the (at least my) Xbox 360 slim built-in wireless adapter does not work with WPA2!!!!!

I've switched the router over to WPA and it's working fine now!
