Here's the situation.

About a year ago, my xbox went RROD. I didn't care much as I just had a baby and had no time to play anyway.
Now that I have a bit more time, I'm wondering what I should do:

a) repair my xbox360 using team xecuter rrod repair kit
-> will the firmware on it be too old? I'm talking about dashboard firmware but also mod firmware. I remember before the rrod, I used to have to patch my backups with some tools because my mod firmware was not up to date. I don't know how to update my mod fw, I bought the x360 modded about 2/3 years ago (it's the first HDMI model). The dash screen is still the old one, before the avatar thingies like on the Wii. Can I still backup games on that old firmware? If I have to update the mod fw, I guess I can follow a tutorial (I'm not THAT dumb!).
b) buy a new x360 and mod it. I have been out of the scene for a while. Are new x360 still moddable to play backups?

Thanks for your help!!!!

It has the old dashboard? Then have someone reflow it (to fix it), update the firmware on it (to read newer games without patching), and JTAG it (to do everything else under the sun)!!!!! It's very well worth it. Or you could sell it to me :)

I will sound completely noobish (and I am!) but can you elaborate a bit?

- what's so special of my situation? Is it because of the hardware I have or the software? I believe you mean that newer hardware are unmoddable vs mine still can. Right?

- I'm unsure how to find someone to reflow my PCB. I know what reflowing is (my company builds PCBa for telecom but I'm from Montreal and the shop is in Mexico) but I don't see myself taking my Xbox to a PCB shop and asking for a reflow? Also, are you sure a reflow would do it? Isn't it a bit like the (bad) towel trick? How would I know if it's successful? RROD would disappear? You don't think that the rrod repair kit would fix it? I repaired my first x360(first gen) like 3 years ago using items from home depot (screws/washers) and it fixed it for like 2 months only.

- So reflow; then update firmware. Which firmware? The x360 one? Like connect my x360 and accept firmware update? Latest firmware is jtgable? Like latest PS3 fw is not, I would've thought same would be for x360? After fw update, JTAG it. Wouldn't my x360 already be jtaged if I was able to play backups? Or firmware update will erase it all? If I do have to rejtag, am I sure I have the correct things in my x360 (I don't think I actually have a mod chip right? Its a software hack)

Again, thanks for the help!

Reflow the motherboard (GPU, H/ANA, and CPU) to fix RRoD.

Update the firmware of the DVD drive to the latest firmware.

Don't update the XBOX 360's dashboard!

Ok

1) reflow. I found some company in Montreal that does it for 50$ Canadian. Here is the link: http://montreal.kijiji.ca/c-buy-and-sell-video-games-consoles-XBOX-360-XBOX-360-PS3-Wii-REPAIRS-REPARATION-RROD-SALES-UPDATES-W0QQAdIdZ228799231
Do they seem to know what they're doing? Anything I need to make sure of? How can I make sure they return my pcb and not another one? Any unique serial?

2) once this is done, I have to update the DVD drive. This means updating the "software mod" right? Can you link to a tutorial? Any ways of knowing what software mod I have? Do I need to know?

3) no dashboard update! Will I still be bale to play all games? (offline as I don't care for xlive)

Your console is JTAG-able because of that old dashboard (software, blade)..once you connect to xbox live or try and play a newer game, it will try to update it to the newest kernel...this is what you don't want. Here in my area, a reflow of the mainboard costs around 40 dollars U.S. and Jtagging runs another 60. Most people will update the drives firmware for free if you get either of the two services above.

The JTAG enables you to run homebrew applications and play games from a hard drive. That's a whole other story, and you can read about the whole process on the stickies on top first page of this forum.

"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

Thanks for the precision. What I did not understand was the link between dashboard version and jtagability. Now I understand.

As previously said, my x360 is already jtaged. So all I need is to update it to latest jtag firmware so I won't have to patch games. Any tutorial?

It doesn't sound like your xbox is jtagged yet. Did you physically open your 360 and solder resistors and switching diodes to your motherboard, and then dump the nand using a computer with a program called nandpro? If not, you might want to research what a jtag console is capable of. There's a big difference what a jtag can do vs. a console that just has flashed DVD firmware. The JTAG process is a long and frustrating process the first time you do a console, but it's well worth it in the end, especially since you don't play games on live. I'm sure there are people in your area who could do it for you, but it comes with a price. As far as reflowing, it fixes most RROD Consoles. The towel trick heats up everything, and that's not good. A proper reflow heats up only the necessary components to resolve the RROD issue.

LT (Lite Touch) is the latest firmware for the Sammy drive, pspndsps3. Hopefully you're not using that firmware on XBOX live.

Ah understood! Now I see what JTAG is vs flashing.

Then I confirm, I doubt my XBOX was ever JTAGed (unless I don't know about it).

I will read to see if JTAG is really needed in my case. Might not really want to go that far but good to know the difference to decide.

If I want to update the iextreme (I presume that's what I have) to the latest, where can I find a guide to do so? I'm thinking I can take care of it myself if I find a tutorial.

- Reflow/reball
- JTAG (maybe)
- Update iextreme (will confirm what my drive is but will need a tutorial)
- NOT updating my dashboard

Coorva,
Thanks for the offer! It's still 3 hours (going and coming back) so that will add ont he $$ in gas! But if I cannot find what I'm looking for here in Montreal, I will definitely give you a PM.

Cheers

Ok so I called the guy from the reflow.

He told me he does a reball (he say he changes the CPU and GPU?). The operation takes around 6 to 8 hours.
He will also update my iextreme to the latest version.

This would cost me 70$ canadian.

Does this sound fair?

He says he could JTAG my box but that's an additional 70$. I'm not sure at this point I'm going for a JTAG.

Sorry to bump up my thread but some new info I need help with.

So I found someone who will reflow my xbox for 40$.
I've asked him if he could update my iextreme to the latest and greatest and he said he could (update it to LT) but it would be useless because a new LT update is coming in the next month. He charges 20$ for the update so he says I'd better be waiting.

He also says that anyway, the newer games like Assassins Creed Brotherhood cannot be backedup and played.

So I'm completly lost here.

1) We established previously that I should NOT update my dashboard. But wouldnt playing a newer game force me to do this? I remember in the past, when I would put a newer game in my xbox, it would ask me to upgrade. Refusing would mean me not playing the game. Is this still the case? If so, what can I do?

2) So I understand that the old dvd drive firmware was called iextreme, and it's now called LT. I'm pretty sure I'm on an old iextreme. Is there a reason why I want to go to LT immediatly and not wait for December? I will NEVER play on Xbox Live. Not interested.

3) I'd like to buy a Kinect and play some Kinect games. Is this possible with my setup? Do I need the latest dashboard? If so, am I screwed (read #1)? What about the dvd drive firmware? Does a certain version work/does not work with Kinect?
