Hey guys,

I am backing up legit copies of games I own, but am a Little confused on something....

How do I get then to back up to my external harddrive, I only have a 40 gig, 1st gen console so thats not enough space. I have a 1tb external that I bought that I thought was in a compatible format but it was not.

It is now converted to Fat32, but it was not when I started backing my titles up. So the question is once it is in FAT32 and pluged into the system, will the console donwload directly to the external, or is there something in the system settings that I need to change

Sorry for the noob question, but it filled up my harddrive and I could not figure out why and then learned that the drive was not FAT32.

So if you could help me out here fellas that would be great!

You have a few choices:

1. FTP the games from your PS3 to PC
2. Use Comgenies File manager to transfer from internal to External
3. Backup your games to External if they are compatible
4. Use your 1TB as internal storage

Is it possible to plug the ps3 direct to the computer and drag and drop the files to the external and then load then back to the ps3 the same way when I want to play them again? Would that work?

Yes Comgenies manager can drag from internal to external
You can connect the PS3 to PC via Ethernet cable and use the FTP server.

Comgenies file manager installs on your PS3, you then transfer using an external HDD.

That's amazing! So I just load it like the backup manager and it will see my fat32 drive and allow me to copy and paste from internal to external. If that's correct you my. Man are a god send! If your in good mood can you post me a link?

You are correct. No changes in settings neccessary. When ripping a game via backup manager, your games will be dumped directly into the external first, then into the internal (only if external is unplugged). If the external is filled and left plugged to the PS3, you will get endless error message because it will keep dumping into the external until unplugged.

Like uLaunch for the PS2, Comgenies is just an File Explorer with the ability to delete, copy, and move files from one directory to another; however, you will not be able to direct boot from Comgenies like how would with uLaunch. Comgenies is an homebrew software for the PS3, PC has no such software.

Yes and No. No point connecting your PS3 directly to PC because they both won't "see" or detect each other. Unless you FTP via direct ethernet cable connection. However, you can connect the external HDD to the PC and drag/drop any files from PC to external, BUT, be aware, some files can be larger than 4GB, which at this point will not successfully transfer over to the external drive. The only way to get around this is to FTP large files to PS3 or to split the large files, transfer it to the external, then re-join it.

Hope this helps. Yeah and don't let my "NEWBIE" status fool you. Been in the PS1/PS2 hacking/softmodding scene (under a different name in Afterdawn) since the beginning of it. LOL. Also, like me, you should try 3TB (two 1.5TB) because this is PS3 and I don't think 1TB is enough. Just my opinion. LOL. Good luck ;)

So lets say i have a an 8gig file that i split into two parts (4gigs each) using winrar, can i copy those two files to the fat32 HDD then merge them inside the HDD by using the fat32 drive as the save location?

I wish it was that easy. I should have added "with a certain program" to my last comment. The thing is, you'll be able to transfer both files to the drive (compressed), but once uncompressed and joined, the FAT32 drive will detect the size limit and cancel the file extraction. It will throw an error message saying something like: "the drive is full (even though it's not), please clean the drive and try again, blah blah blah....." It practically treat this situation as transferring an uncompressed 8GB file from your PC's C:/ drive to the external PS3 drive. So no, merging a file (larger than 4GB) inside of FAT, using wirar, will not work. Hope this make some kind of sense.

On a side note, you'll have to use certain program(s) designed to insert files larger than 4GB into FAT/FAT32 drives. I used to use this program to install 5GB-8GB games into my PS2's FAT-formatted HDD, from my PC, but it's been far too long since I've used it so I forgot what the program is called. I will look for it and keep you posted when I have time.
