>> A new beta version [build 12606] of the Fall 2010 [alias 'Kinect'] dashboard has been leaked on the internet a few days ago and it seems like Microsoft added new protections to it. Several users seems to report problems booting certain games from recordable media on 360s with a modified DVD FW.
One of the titles affected seems to be Fable III. The game boots fine from any media on the current dashboard on a 360 with modified FW, but fails to boot from recordable media on the leaked/12606 beta dashboard ["This disc is unreadable"] - while the retail disc will work just fine according to #FW@EFnet.

Right now it's unclear which games, DVD models and/or modified FWs are exactly affected.

The new fall 2010 dashboard might get official released tomorrow [Tuesday Oct 26th 2010] (unconfirmed date, but it will be before Nov 4th anyway) to all 360 owners, so we suggest you do NOT update if you have a modified FW until we know more about these issues.
JTAG users should of course not update at all (will lock-out old CB and make the JTAG hack impossible), they should wait for a new rebooter.

Well that sure blows.

One question. Say you got one 360 thats unmodded and another that is modded. If you use the same hard drive and update on the unmodded, that don't mean that the next time you connect the hard drive to the modded that it will update correct?

You actually need to connect to live to update?

I think it will update if you do that

I didn't think it actually saves the update on your hard drive, I thought the update is saved to the core memory then installed as you can update without a hard drive attached.

Ok, lets say it does save on the hard drive and if you put the drive on a 360 without the update, it still asks you if you want to update. You can simply say no.

I got the leaked update like a few weeks or a month ago so will I be fine? I am going to check when I get home anyways.

I don't know, seems people are reporting issues with a beta build that was prior to the one mentioned above. I'd say you got a 50/50 chance.

This explains it all. Found this at Xbox Scene Community. Its about missing an avatar pack in the beta and fable 3 not booting right.

So will a new firmware for the drives get released to play these games after this update goes through?

Nobody knows if this is necessary yet. Only 1 game is affected so far and even that is working for some people on various versions of the Kinect dashboard, but not for others.

Something weird is going on though, for sure. Unless a ton of people that were burning games perfectly fine have suddenly forgotten how to do it, then there is something different about either the Kinect dashboard, Fable 3 or both. It doesn't work for me and I've tried iXtreme non-stealth firmware, Lite Touch 1.1 and 3 different versions of the Kinect dashboard - 2 of which had the avatars included, so missing avatars isn't the reason for it. There are also people in the official beta who have the latest update direct from MS, and Fable 3 still gives the "This disc is unreadable" error.

Something else that happened to me yesterday is that I moved my USB stick with my gamertag over to my online console (an unflashed Slim) and my gamertag was corrupt. I moved the stick back to my flashed Elite and the gamertag was recognised just fine. It's the sort of thing that happened in the last ban wave, only my Elite is unbanned and has been kept offline for over a year.

It's sensible to reserve judgement until someone in the know does some testing, but there are people on Xbox-Scene burying their heads in the sand over this and trying to make out it's just people not knowing how to burn games and so on, but it certainly isn't that.

Its interesting how there hasn't been a ban hammer yet. Maybe this is why. If M$ know they can eliminate modded consoles from xbox live with the next update, there is no need to ban. Then again, this is only speculation but I'm not updating unless I know its safe. Maybe there is someone brave out there that is willing to roll the dice? :)

To add to what I said above, every time I try and boot Fable 3 on my offline flashed console, it corrupts my gamertag. Once corrupted, the gamertag still works fine on the flashed console, but if I switch my USB stick with my gamertag on it to my online unflashed console, the gamertag just shows up as corrupt and I have to delete it and recover it from Live. Someone on Xbox-Scene is also reporting the same issue.

Once the gamertag has been recovered, I can switch between consoles and everything is fine. All games works as normal, except Fable 3. I'm now running the latest beta dashboard with avatars and the game still gives the "This disc is unreadable" error and it corrupts my gamertag each time I attempt to boot it.

try moving profile and any data being used from the usb to the harddrive and then see what happens. Someone stated that they formatted their data devices and then fable 3 started booting fine after that.

sorry for being rude to you yesterday, was a bad day for me all around

If you send me questions on Live about modding or anything related i will block you. Dont be an idiot.

Hey, no problem mate. I was a grumpy git yesterday as well so I also apologise. Check out the new thread I've just started, as it's on this topic.

I tried Fable 3 last night and it works. So maybe its the later BETA release that makes the games not work. Either way I am not updating my banned console anymore.
