Engadget reveals the long awaited PlayStation Phone

article published on 27 October, 2010

Engadget has revealed the long awaited PlayStation Phone tonight, posting pictures of a working model of the upcoming device. There have long been rumors that Sony Ericsson was creating a PSP phone, one that would include the gaming aspects of a PSP while adding phone functionality. Engadget says the phone will hit the market "soon," likely in the Q1 2011. The device will run on ... [ read the full article ]

I probably would buy this once my contract is up in April, but I'm disappointed that it isn't being shipped with a dual-core processor :(

Guess I'll just have to wait and see how it comes out... Will definitely be faster then my current Android phone though (HTC Touch/Vogue) lol

Wasn't it just reported here and on max console that the "new psp" had a touchscreen? I see no controller nub at all, i wonder if there still planning on selling a standalone model without the actual phone aspect. xS somehow, I think this one is going to sell worse than the original psp due to the lack of a nub.

This phone does have a touch screen interface.

PSPs don't have analog sticks; that is probably the biggest customer complain about them. I can't say that this plays PSP games, but I see no reason why it would not.

Too bad they took so long to release this; I might have purchased one if it had come out a year ago.

The PSP has a single analog nub... Considering it's supposed to be portable, I'd rather have dual nubs than dual sticks protruding from the front.

Just a thought, but considering the pad in the center is a multitouch track pad, perhaps they will utilize a touch interface for dual analog control rather than use dual nubs. Since there are two silver dots, those may represent the center of the touch area for the left and right analog controls. Something similar to how the DS used the touch screen for movement instead of an analog nub.

I think I may have misstated that, or you may have possibly misinterpreted it what I meant. Yes it does have a touch screen, but I was under the impression that the "new" psp was also supposed to have a touch interface as well.

You see that little thing in between the D-pad and the buttons?

Maybe they could be touch sensitive analogue sticks. I mean, it works on the iPod Touch/iPhone, so why not touch-sensitive analogue sticks on a new PSP phone? It won't be sticking out or anything.

EDIT: Very weird...

If you see the first picture, it says 'A' to enter and 'B' to go back yet there's only triangle, circle, cross and square. Mm...

This could just be Ericson's way to compete with Apple, and the PS division agreed that using a similar control scheme to the GO may appeal to consumers. I agree that it may not in fact be for PSP games at all, until Sony officially responds everything here is just speculation.

Sony should be announcing sometime soon tho, as the more hardware pics gets leaked, the more people are gonna demand answers.

I hate touch sensitive analog stick especially the ones I've used on the ipod touch. I want a real analog stick that sticks out, Not that Sony cares what I want.

*Make that two real analog sticks that stick out.

I wonder if anything can be put in the center gray area, since it looks ugly. And it will likely have access to the same store that the pspGO has.

We wanted a PSPhone 3 years ago, and they could have done it. Now we are all looking forward to the PSP2, and the idea of a PSP1 of any kind is already feeling a bit pointless. Plus, the specs on it are not very good by the standards of when it will launch; it looks like it will only have about 1/4 the power of the competition.

For the types of games I play I could go without the analogue sticks/nubs. That being said the two circles in the centre are obviously meant for that. That being said, I think Sony has already commented that this is a fake.

I've been considering replacing my old Flip phone. Never bought a PSP. Though I was tempted at one time. Now I just may :D Keep the prices down $ony, and you can count on my gratuity ;)

To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!
