Ford Expedition DVD Player Compatibility

Thanks in advance for your help everyone.
I have a number of backed up discs that I HAVE to take with me on the road for reasons that will be obvious in a minute. However, I have had the hardest time getting backedup discs to play on my Ford Expedition DVD player. Some discs pause every minute or so while some skip once in a while. The three Ford dealers in my area do not know the manufacturer of the players. So I can't search the DVD player compatibility lists that others here have offered to fellow members. The discs play perfectly in my other three cars: Mercedes with Audiovox DVD system, Acura with Alpine DVD system, and a Lexus with a Mark Levinson DVD system (although I doubt if they make the DVD player). Does anyone know the maufacturer of the Ford system? I tried both DVD-R and DVD+R discs and burned at both maximum and 1X speeds. I'm thinking that I might have to give up and turn in the Ford (is it any coincidence that the American car didn't work? should have wasted a little more money for the Lexus GX. Guys take note.). I can only go so far on long trips without my 3 year old saying the "Barney is broken" everytime I put disc in there to view. Now besides being a bad father offering my kids countless hours of snappy Barney tunes, has anyone else had this problem or should I take it to Ford to see if they can offer a solution? Who makes the Ford DVD player?
I forgot to add that I backed up discs with Nero, CloneDVD or DVD X Copy (but they all play in other DVD players).

Are you saying you're going to trade in your whole car because the DVD player won't play DVD+/-R discs?
Wow - that's drastic. Maybe you should just drug the kid to keep him quiet while you travel?

Dude,
I drove up the coast to San Francisco from LA and back. He didn't want to watch his usual favorites: Monsters, Finding Nemo or Shrek, I don't know why. It all Barney all the time. Only Barney at the Zoo worked fine (I happened to take the original disc). Being a 3 year old he doesn't like to wear headphones so what he hears, I have to hear. So Imagine for a minute driving up Highway 1 for nine hours listening to Barney sing, "Elephant, he's big and friendly!" every half hour.

I'm sorry - I find this very amusing.
Why don't you just bring the originals with you? They're not going to go bad. And even if they somehow do get messed up, we're talking BARNEY here. The kid will have to learn to like something new - like SpongeBob Square Pants!

What brand/type media have you been using? Top quality media can improve compatibility with picky players such as the one in your Ford.
Some good ones to try would be Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim Metal AZO or Ritek G04.

I usually use specific discs depending on importance. But for this purpose, I tried all my usual brands to see if it would solve the problem: Verbatim, TDK, Memorex, Ritek and Fuji. A cheapie House brand from an online retailer works sometimes with the one I did backup (three stooges DVD) but the player kept saying bad disc and ejects it. I just have to put it back in and about the tenth time it would work.

In that case I'd have to say the player just doesn't like burned discs. It'd be interesting to know who manufactures it though.
I guess the Yank Tanks need better DVD players :) Be sure to bring some burned movies when you test drive the Ford's replacement!

I just got a 2004 Expedition, and am having the same exact problems - backups will only play after inserting them about 5-10 times (once they play though, they play flawlessly). Did you ever have any luck finding media that works well? Or the manufacturer of the unit?

Congrats on that new SUV. Don't want to slam anything made in the USA but as you've read in my earlier post, I've had problems with the DVD player adn the stereo system overall. I called every Ford Dealer in the Southern California area regarding the DVD player. What I get most is: "Ford makes their own DVD players", "its made by Philco (ha! Philco went bankrupt in 1962 and Ford bought its assets only for manufacturing of electronic components)" and "I don't know." What I did find out is that the screen is made by Delphi, a great electronics OEM manufacturer and the chasis of the DVD player is made by JBL. Unfortunately, I still don't know who makes the damn thing. But what I have been having luck with is this: I use Ritek G04 media with NO label and backed up with CloneDVD and it works fine. I think the key here is what you'll find from multiple threads on this site: use higher quality media and no label.
By the way, what program and media are you using to backup?

Thanks for the info. I use Ritek G03 DVD-R burned on a Pioneer 104 (Nero). I put my own labels on them. I will try no label.
I just ordered a Pioneer 107 and some Ritek G04 media (coincidentally) and also some DVD+R samples. The plan is to try a bunch of different stuff. I will post my findings here.
So you get 100% operation with G04 media with no labels?

Yes, no labels seem to be the key here. Other than that, I have had no success with Nero burned DVDs on the player. They pause/play/pause/play all the time. CloneDVD works best for me. By the way, now that I think of it, I have never tried DVD+R media. Let me know how that works.

I have a friend who works at Ford. He found out for me that the units are indeed made by Delphi (see press release here also: http://www.delphi.com/media/news/pressReleases/pr26207-01042004)
I still bet the player itself is made by someone else...
Plan to try no labels tonight, and DVD+R when it arrives. Will let you know any findings.

I have had no luck with DVD+R. However, Ritek G04 burned with Nero is working flawlessly! Thanks for the help.

I know this topic hasn't come up in a long time but I just had luck with my Ford Expedition DVD player. I just downloaded the new DVD Shrink v3.2 and used the automatic burn with Nero feature for one step convenience and - oh yeah! - the disc plays perfectly in my Ford's DVD player. Also, I did use TDK +R discs that I got from Costco ($25/ 25 pack buy one get one free!). I don't think in my experimenting that I ever used TDK +R discs before but then again, it could be the new DVD Shrink v 3.2 as well.
