So I just use a 1.5TB as my internal outside the PS3 connected via a SATA Male/female into the ORICO 8618sus. This has many benifits the most obvious you can use any size HD now as your Internal, plus by connecting it to the ORICO 8618sus this has its own power supply so you lose the risk of YLOD over heating. This is the first only one ive seen that has the SATA option on the back as most portable HD cases just have the USB. Its so easy to do, all you have to do is open the PS3 HD compartment pull it out and then plug in the SATA and have that hang out of the PS3 and plug that into the ORICO 8618sus and voila and size HD now becomes the internal
It is nice that you are finally discovering this...but it has been around for a while. In fact, they make a custom ESATA caddy to replace the hard drive caddy so it looks all professional.

The Xecuter Caddy, was released before the PS3 was released in UK, it only works on fat consoles and lets you connect both IDE and Sata 3.5" or 2.5" HDD's
