Hey guys, for the past week I've been reading the forums and watching youTube videos and trying to learn how to mod one of my xboxs to play back-ups. I have tried a few different things.
I have three xBox's and they are:
1. xBox from 2006 with dashboard: 2.0.7371.0 and a Toshiba/Samsung drive with fw: 25ms and the xenon mobo.
2. xBox from 2006 with dashboard: 2.0.8955.0, a Hitachi drive (RomVer 78fk) with a xenon mobo.
3. xBox (date unknown) with dashboard: 2.0.9199.0, a Lite-On drive with fw: 74850C and a xenon mobo.
I have tried two different computers and Slax 2.1. The first computer is a desktop running Windows 7 (64bit) and the second is a HP laptop running Windows 7 (32bit).
On the desktop they were hooked directly to the modo sata port and on the laptop hooked to the USB port using this connector: http://www.manhattan-products.com/en-US/products/6706-hi-speed-usb-2-0-to-sata-ide-adapter
booting up through the dvd drive, slax never gave me the 'disk is spinning up' msg and every time gave me the 'ata(x): is slow to respond...'. It would eventually roll past that stuff and leave me at the Slax2.1 login.
I also tried through Windows to use JungleFlasher ver. 1.55, 1.67, 1.73, 1.75 and LiteOn_iXtreme_v1.61.
Oh yeah, PortIO32 is installed on the laptop.
I don't have one of those connector kits, but read on some form that you don't need it if you're hooking to the pc and using xBox power.
Does anybody have any ideas why none of these would be recognized in any of those methods or what I can do to get them recognized.
I was thinking about trying to jTag the 7371 Toshiba/Samsung machine since the dashboard could take it, and maybe try to flash one of the others.
Any suggestions?

Hey w00ly, is there any one of these machines that you think would be easy(est) to flash, I've read the Hitachi can be a pain in the ass, and nearly impossible.

the hitachis aren't impossible, but if you don't use the tutorial you can brick the drive. The 74 is easier than the hitachi since it only requires a simple probe. The samsung is by far the easiest if you use jungleflasher, and the hardest if you want to jtag it (though the rewards are greater)

Learn how to Jtag your xbox (or have it done for you). trust me.
I figured I'd be perfectly fine with just flashing my drive, but all the disc's you'll use up. Not worth it for me personally. (unless having the physical copy is quite important to you)

Alright guys, I just tried the .pdf tutorial from jungleflasher.net and made it to page 45(ish) when the diagram says to divert to the win xp section. I'm running windows 7 and I tried to piece it together but JungleFlasher still says that no Hitachi drive was detected.
Maybe I'll try the Lite-On
When it comes to jtagging the xbox, I'm fine for the soldering, is it crazy hard after that?

The forums that I've browsed always seem to center around soldering being the hardest part.
Of course this is all secondhand info. Someone may have more insight.

Just tried again and HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR3120L USB Device has shown up in Device Manager for the first time ever. However it's not coming up in JungleFlasher.
I still get the 'no hitachi drive found' message in JungleFlasher and there's a small alert exclamation point next to the device in Device Manager.

I haven't seen a mention of what type of chipset you're trying to flash with. VIA 6421 is the chipset that is advised to use. The operating system to flash with is also supposed by be XP. Although flashing with either of these is not impossible, nor the lack of both, but it will be a much tougher battle to flash without these principal components. Also, the PDF tutorial is interactive, you click and it takes you to the next step. If I were you, I'd really check out the stickies at the top front page of this forum...EVERY situation has been covered at some point.
It sounds like you're spinning your wheels, so just want to be direct and to the point to try and save you some time.
"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."

Thanks guys, I appreciate the directness of the answers. I do have a small problem with the PDF tutorial...........it doesn't seem to tell me what to do if my drive doesn't go into mode-b.
That's the part I'm stuck at.
also would it make any sense if I said my processor was an ICH9M for a chipset?

lol the drive has to be in mode b, that's why it's not working. Go back to the top, scroll down a little till you get the links for which drive. Click hitachi then click the drive revision you have. That'll tell you exactly how to get it into mode b

Hey, I only first heard about the unlock CD tonight. as for the Samsung I haven't focused on it much.
I got the liteOn flashed tonight at a friends place. When I put it back together it runs regular games just fine, but for some reason burned ISOs do a couple odd click noises then don't work.
I was using Memorex DVD+Rdl

Turns out it was the DVD Burner on my laptop, tried the exact same technique on a desktop and worked first try!
