I've never heard grinding and I've worked on BluRay drives before. Have you tried putting the magnet on top of the disc after it's sucked in?

alright mate thanks for getting back to me, no i havent, i have tried pressing down on it, my top blu ray drive cover is off the silver encloser, so i can see how it behaves under neath when the disc spins to make sure there is contact, i have tried with the cover on, but it was making the noise so i took it off, it read the discyhen spins up really quickly and then keeps spinning,, im waiting for my mate to come back off holiday, so i can use his magnetic disc spinner just incase this one is faulty, but im assuming they should all be same? its for the 60GB model, the guy on ebay confirmed it is, and on you tube iv seen this item and its a little white spinner thing, which looks the same as mine, the only other thing i was going to do is a system restore, but want that as a last resort!

il drop it in and report back!

alright mate just tried it, it just spins mega fast making a whirring noise now!then stops! the spinner is grabbing the disc, but without it it still behaves the same!

ok more info on this, it seems like when the disc spins for the first couple of times it spins so fast that the disc is touching the top of the drive or sometimes the right hand side! thats what must be causing the grinding noise, iv just seen it move and not spinning exaclty in the middle! it is playing an audio CD fine now, is there anyway to resolve this problem?

resolved! the magnetic spinner was faulty the tip was bent! which was causing the discs to be mis aligned! when pushing down on it
