Some kind of poorly hacked firmware update that breaks all updates in the future...just wonderful.

I guess there is some good...as soon as the first person gets this update, the scene will tear it apart and we might learn something useful.

The PS Jailbreak device was too expensive, it was cloned and was also made open source, PS Downgrade, is just software, so its going to be cloned/copied very easily :)

So the new "downgrader". Is it free for the people that bought the original PS jailbreak?
If not they have quite the scheme going. No doubt that we should expect another firmware update just to try and combat this downgrader.
And if and when Sony starts releasing a PS3 with out any USB ports ( I doubt they will) please don't bitch and complain how Sony is screwing people over.
Crap like this is why the other OS feature was removed and whether its a valid excuse or not it was a good enough excuse for Sony to be able to do so.

OtherOS was removed because Sony didn't like paying their engineers to work on something that only about 5% of the users were using frequently, and only about 10% of the users used at all (oddly, they are happy to spend many times more on the PS Move, which has an even lower market saturation). Before OtherOS was removed, there was no jailbreaking method, and it is clear now that the hack that GeoHot released had nothing to do with the jailbreak, as it is not included with the jailbreak, nor is linux needed to utilize the jailbreak. If anything, the removal of OtherOS created the current situation.

MYTHS:
1.) OtherOS was removed to prevent piracy: OtherOS removal was not justified; even after being sued multiple times, sony has yet to show any hint of proof that the GeoHot exploit could have been used for piracy. They really have nothing to loose here; there are already well known piracy methods, and they have done plenty of firmware updates to close any holes they might have found. Even with their intimate knowledge of the platform, Sony cannot get the GeoHot update to do anything piracy-related, even on a very old firmware. They cannot justify it now, nor could they then. If anything, removal of OtherOS pissed off a lot of dedicated linux users who all went to war against sony. If Sony had removed OtherOS after showing it could be used for piracy, they would have been wrong to do it. As it is, they removed it for no reason at all (unless you consider the creation of piracy to be a reason).
2.) The original jailbreak was leaked from sony by an angry engineer: This cannot be the case; the device that sony uses works very differently; it does not make use of a buffer overload to start, it does not put the system into a "jailbreak" mode, and it works with firmwares above 3.41

Oh and the whole "Sony removed OtherOS because of GeoHot" is a load of rubbish.
