Hi, I just got an Xbox 360 off of some guy for like 50$, he said it had a bad flash, and I thought no big deal. I'd just replace the DVD-ROM drive.
My question though, is is there any chance I could reflash it, or unflash it, or roll back the firmware or something to make it work? If I could do this, it'd be so much cheaper than buying a new ROM drive and installing it myself and all of that.

If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know.

Thanks.

bad flash usually means the original fw isnt on the drive anymore and if a backup of the dvd drive key wasnt saved then there isnt much hope for it. it is possible to retrive the key from the board but it is a bit of an advanced procedure that requires special equipment and soldering

Ok, so basically it'd be easier to install a new dvd drive? Is what you're saying?

no you cant install a new dvd drive unless you have the key that was in the original drive. if that key wasnt saved then no drive will work at all.

this isnt like a normal PC where you can swap out parts and have them work. the drive in a 360 is married to the system board it comes with by the key that is in each of them. if the drive doesnt have the same key as what is in the system board then it will not work. it will play movies but not games

No, what he's saying is that you're pretty much screwed. You can't just put a new dvd drive in the 360, as the 360's motherboard and dvd drive have to be paired (dvdkey) in order to be able to play games. Sure, it will play movies just fine if you put a new dvd drive in there, but when you insert a game disc, it will say, "Play DVD". If you can get your $50 back, I would do so. If not, you have a nice big DVD player (if you invest in a new dvd drive for it).

Stealth, you beat me to it ;)

Fudge... That's what I was afraid of...
Is there any chance this key is written on the DVD drive? I'm going to check and make sure in a minute.
Also, is there any chance I could run some sort of brute force program into it? And see if it works?

If the answer to the above is no, is there any chance that you'd mind explaining that procedure to me? Cuz I'm not just going to let this Xbox sit here... I have the experience to pull the stuff off, I just need to know somethings about these Xboxs.

you can see if the key is still there but if it is a bad flash then im willing to bet 99.99999% that it is not there, cause thats what a bad flash is.

the only way to get the key would be to desolder the tsop from the systemboard and put it into a socket reader and read it that way. and then you would have to solder the chip back onto the board. so unless you are really good with soldering that isnt going to happen. now there are some people/sites that you can send it to and they can do it for a fee if you want to spend the money.

it might be cheaper or just slightly more $ to just buy a working used 360.

Ok... Well I'm getting an E-64 error, so I can't even get to the dash, what could that mean?

And this is really looking like it's gonna be a pain..

LOL, you just wasted 50$ my friend. The guy completely ripped you off too, and if its a bad flash then the drive is useless, unless you use it as a 0800 drive. I got my Ben-Q for 20$ off ebay :P

Do your research before you spend your money !

E-64 is a Bad DVD Flash

-_-.......

This is really starting to piss me off.
I repaired my original Xbox no problem, why does Microsoft have to put these new security features on it..

Is there any chance I can hook the DVD drive up to my computer and find an update for it on the internet somewhere?

How much would the socket tester thing cost?

e-64 means there is something wrong with the systemboard. basically the same as when you get rrod. but i would have to agree with the other guys...you got ripped off. sold you a bad system altogether.

bottom line is if you dont have the key from the drive then it wont work period at all and there is no fix for it. its garbage. you would have to research the socket and stuff but if you dont know how to solder it isnt even worth trying.

I know how to solder, I just don't want to if I don't have to chance it..
I even have the soldering equipment, I just don't have a socket reader..

And I'm probably going to text the guy back right now, I payed 50 to a friend for his phone, then traded his phone to the guy. So I may try to get that.

How much could I sell the just the system for on ebay? Add in a few games like UFC undisputed and other stuff?

i dont know why someone on ebay would want it if its broken that badly. try to get your money back. gamestop might give you 30 bucks fro a broken console since they refurb them (they do a crap job btw )

no idea never tried to look for one. google might know. but you got to think of this first, if the e-64 error isnt fixed then the board is bad and there is no point in even looking for the socket.

Here's the info on the error (I really do not see any type of soldering fixing this problem, its associated with the Bad Flash)

The guy selling it said it had a bad flash and you agreed to paying $50 for it, I don't get why people are saying the buyer got ripped off. The seller seemed pretty up front about it.

If you strip it down you can probably sell the parts off and make some of your money back, i see faceplates and shells sell for around 20-30 bucks on its own.

Regardless, gl with your endeavor.

You may try this in vain, but you could try dumping the drive and reading the bin file with a hex editor. Try searching on google, as there are there posts about this out there, and in particular what the location of the key is in the bin file...there was one forum where I got help from more experienced coders to retrieve the key off a console. I don't remember what forum unfortunately, this was a bit over a year ago. Out of 6 or so consoles I've only succeeded ONCE trying this. In my situation, luckily, whoever had written the bad firmware had the system write enough of the code so that the line containing the key was still present.

I downloaded a stock firmware for that particular drive, wrote the recovered key over it and it worked out just fine.

Good luck.

"All drives should be updated to Lite Touch + (LT+) firmware if playing on XBOX live. Samsung drives and pre-78/79 Hitachi drives do not utilize AP 2.5. All other drives are considered to be detectable by Microsoft (YMMV). Make sure all rips are ABGX verified, contain SSv2, and patched AP2.5 (where needed). XGD3 must currently be burned on new drive with PC Burner Max firmware for 100% rip. All modded consoles can be potentially unsafe for use on XBOX live."
