Okay, I've googled every variation of my question I can think of and cannot find a straight answer anywhere. Hopefully this won't take long since I'm on a laptop with about an hour's worth of charge left.
Here's my predicament: I have a Lite-On 360. This is my first flash attempt with a drive since my BenQ crapped out. I bought a CK3 Probe v1, thinking this was all I needed. Now I'm reading that 'it's best' to get the CK3 Connectivity Kit to power the drive.
So do I really need this? Can I not use the power from the xbox, the way you could with a BenQ? Again, I've got the probe, so I can pseudo-solder R707, but is this possible without using the $50-after-shipping CK3 kit?

I just want a straight yes or no, and if there are risks, just tell me what they are and give me like a general percentage of serious risk. Thanks in advance!

edit: yes, it is a 7-series lite-on.

Now that I've stated the basic question, I'll give some more info while I'm waiting...
I tried doing this just using the probe once, when I first got the probe in the mail. In case no one else in the world but me has bought the probe by itself, it also comes with the ck3 connector that attaches to the probe. So I disassembled the 360and drive plate, hooked up the new Ck3 to the mobo and the drive with the probe cable to the drive. As soon as I connected the probe to its cable, my 360 powered on and the drive opened automatically. I thought that was somewhat odd, but continued anyhow. I closed the drive back to make sure the light would stop blinking, and then stuck the probe in the hole of R707. the light on the probe turns green and the drive opens up. Seems to be working well, so I disconnected the ck3 cable from the drive. I pushed the drive halfway in, made sure the probe was still in R707 and plugged the ck3 cable back into the drive, and instantly three lights start flashing red. i was filled with horror. disconnected the probe, turned the 360 off and back on, and it still works. I figured I should probably quit while my console still works, so here I am.
Did I do something wrong? Should I have waited to probe R707 until after I had connected the drive? Or is this just the inevitability of trying to do this without that stupid kit?

I also felt it necessary to note that I found a tutorial on xbox-experts.com detailing how to build a ck3 lite + probe, and i even salvaged the resistors and transistor out of an old CRT monitor to build this thing, but after looking over it a few times, it seems like the guy just made a probe - which i've already got - and used the power from the xbox - which i've also got. of course, i know next to nothing about electronics aside from the occasional 360 flash and ps2 repair, so i might just be confused.
