Hey hows it going everyone?

Basically heres the problem: i have a ps3 to repair, its not reading ANY form of disc. I tried cleaning the laser - didnt work , went into recovery console selected 3rd option - restore system files - didnt work aswell but the recovery console reported that hard drive filing system is corrupted.

Now since that moment i have tried several things - full restore, full format (using ps3) , format (using my pc) nothing seems to solve the hard drive corruption. Every time i run the recovery console it tells me its corrupted.

My question is the following - can the hard drive be responsible for not reading any discs? Im about to purchase a replacement laser assembly and i dont really want to end up with 2 perfectly fine lasers smile

I have been a permanent resident of google for the past week:lol:, with no success, so i am counting on you guys - any help will be apreciated!!!

Thnaks for your time,

Arthur S.

so does the HD seem to work fine when hooked to the pc? If you formated with your pc, did it work as a storage drive? Idk, but sounds like laser to me, at the very least it should pick up a game and try to run it, does a game show up at all if inserted in?

Thanks for a quick reply chbunch,

The hard drive works absolutely fine through my pc , it's recognised as a mass storage etc.. The funny thing is - if i havent run the recovery console in the first place i would have no idea that the hard drive is corrupted , it was functioning fine with the ps3, its just in the recovery console that it appears to be corrupted.

When i insert a disc (any) the loading icon appears in top right hand corner but that about it. No spinning noise (should be like 2000rpm which is clearly audiable =)) . The disc also doesnt move much because when i eject it, it stays in the same (almost the same really like a few degrees in rotation)place.

I am really confused as to why the recovery console reports that its corrupted - even after all the formats and restores, and could this affect the disc issue?

I would "think" that it is definitely the disc drive. I have zero experience with bad ones or replacing them on a ps3, but ive done many on pcs. Sounds like your hd is fine, i have no idea why it would say that, i did not even know ps3 had a recovery console diagnostic option. I doubt even if your hd was bad that it would affect the disc booting, but i could see it giving an error when trying to install game data, but it seems it does not even get that far. Im pretty sure that firmware and all is in ps3 internal memory, hd is just for game data, game saves, and personal files, so I doubt that hd is the problem. I might try to get some more input on it though, out of curiosity what does a disc drive for the ps3 cost?

Thanks for your help,

A laser + motor assembly cost about 50-60GBP, it's just that i am quite skint at the moment so i cant afford to buy it and then realise that i needed to buy a hdd instead =)

I will continue google'ing whether the hdd is in any way responsible for the correct operation of the BR Drive.

I understand completely, i was not trying to imply that you should just buy one, I would consider my options closely before trying to replace the drive. I would wish it was the HD, just does not sound like it at all. Good luck with it, maybe someone with a bit more insight than me will post here. Post back if you find anything, ill be interested to see what you find out.

Hey hows it going?

Just thought id report back on what i found =)

I couldn't figure out what's wrong with the HDD - my guess is that there is some sort of physical malfunction as all of the software seems to be working fine through my PC. Even though this 'corrupted file system' doesn't seem to affect the ps3 much, i will advise the owner to upgrade the HDD as you can get a much bigger one for a relatively small price.

The issue with the BR drive not reading any discs was down to the laser diode. I have carried out a diagnostic run on a semi disassembled drive with a transparent disc. Basicaly i stripped down the drive to expose the laser and the servo mech, put a transparent disc into it and powered on the console. When the console thinks theres a disc in the drive at startup, it will send 3 waves from the laser to reflect back from the disc (a blue , red and Ir) and only when it receives the signal back does it start to spin the disc. Well mine did seem to execute that patern as the laser head moved up and down 3 times, but the laser diode itself didnt light up as it should so i think its safe to assume that the laser needs replacement =)

Ive ordered a replacement laser + servo mech for just 39£ online, comes in one piece, quite easy to install. Ill get back when ive fixed it!

Peace...

just a quick feedback

If you end up determining that you indeed have to replace the laser/motor assy, and paying the full price, might I suggest to put up a ad at the local for sale forums, that you'd be interested in buying a broken PS3, then inquire the reason why it was broken, and if the laser/motor assy is not the reason why their PS3 is not functioning, then make a reasonable offer to buy that from them.

..anyway..just a thought to consider

If a PS3 says there is a problem with a hard drive, then their is either a very serious problem with the drive itself, or the connection between the mainboard and the drive is loose. The PS3 is very forgiving about disk errors and such, for it to throw an error is a bad sign. I might recommend doing a sector scan and reading the SMART data on it; unless it is one of those terrible Seagate drives...if the drive is made by seagate, save yourself some time and just throw it away.

I've been looking all over for how to fix this as I have the same problem, but with no luck! If you end up fixing your ps3, I'd love to hear how.
Thanks :]
