I've heard about people being able to format western digital drives to work with the new Xbox 360 slim but I was wondering is there even a possibility that Microsoft would be able to detect what you are doing? Let alone ban you from XBL?

Other than Microsoft coming to your house, knocking on your door, being invited in, opening your 360, taking the drive out, and physically looking at it, you're safe.
