I'm having trouble connecting my Xbox 360 Game Console to Shaw high speed internet.
I have a modem and router connected to my PC, which works fine. Whenever I want to use
the internet for the Xbox, I disconnect my modem from the pc/router and bring it over to where the Xbox is. I've been doing this for a while with no problems, but lately when I try to connect the modem to the Xbox, the Xbox says that it cannot obtain an IP address, I?ve tried hardware resets with no luck. Then if I am to later bring the modem back to my PC I cannot get an internet connection with the PC either, even after doing the hardware reset instructed by the Shaw support software. Just luckily I am online now after doing numerous resets with my PC and Modem/Router.
Is this because I'm only allowed 2 ip addresses, which are already taken up by my PC and router?
Is it possible to routinely "disable" the ip address for my PC or router and bring it over to the Xbox? and then when I?m finished with the Xbox, to bring the internet connection back to my pc/router/modem?
If this is possible will I have to manually setup ip address/subnet mask/gateway/dns on the Xbox, and if so what will I have to enter (cmd->ipconfig/all)? Or is this not possible at all, unless I buy an extra IP address, which I really don?t want to do, because I never have all 3 devices (computer/router/Xbox) connected at the same time, it?s either the computer/modem/router or only the Xbox at a time.
The point of the router is to hand out IPs locally on your network so you can have 1 IP from your ISP. You are likely correct in assuming that the reason you can't pull an IP is because the MAC address for your router is already associated with that 1 IP. If you want to keep doing it this way you could try powering off the router and connecting your xbox. The easiest thing to do would be a wireless adapter for your 360 and connect to your router (assuming your router has wifi) and be able to have 360 and PC online at the same time
Thanks for the reply. Yes this Boxing Day I am already planning on buying the Wireless N adapter. I bought the older version years ago, and it wasn't that great. My brother has his Cisco Linksys WRT160N installed, which is a pretty bad router IMO, so once I get the adapter I'm going to install my D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N Gigabit Router. I've had it for a few years, and I hear it's still one of the best. Do you think this will be pretty fast (full bars when playing), or should I get a better/faster router coming this boxing day? Thanks.
