I need some advice / hints. My PS3 was the first released 60gb and has served my well all these years. Approx 4 weeks ago it stopped reading all discs, bluray, dvd and cd. After some minor research on google I decided to replace the laser. I puchased a new laser/carriage combo and to my dissapointment it made no difference. Then to add to my woes, I got the dreaded YLOD with the unit not even turning on anymore. After searching the forums and googling I again dismantled my unit and performed a "reflux" repair and to my joy the beast was alive again, although was still not reading discs. I then out a new HDD in, formatted and reset with PS3 originak settings and to my surprise it was working again, reading all discs and playing games again.
This lasted one night!!
The next time I attempted to use my ps3 again it would not read discs!! I decided to reformat my new hdd again (took over 16hrs!!) and agin it started working, although I only played for about 5 mins then turned the unit off. When I turned the unit back on later in the day, again it wont read any discs........
So to date:
-I have replaced the laser.
-Refluxed the main board.
-Replaced and reformatted the HDD.
Other than not playing discs (oh yeah, it seems to be spinning the discs, the disc always ejects with the label in a different position) everything works perfectly.
Any ideas??? I believe there is a "controller" board? I am looking for suggestions other than ebay to buy my components.
Played the game for a few minutes, decided to restart to see what happens and you guessed it, not working again, nor is the DVD or CD this time. One thing I notice is that every time I eject a disc, it has only moved the slightest, perhaps an inch at a time, not sure if this is coincedence, or the disc is not spinning properly?

Repeat this test a few times...if it is repeatable most of the time, then you can be reasonably sure that the problem is with something that spins.
Also, the format tools built into the PS3 are trash...they will not do a full wipe, even if you use that BS 16 hour "full format". Once you do a full backup, pull the drive out and connect it to a windows PC. Open the command prompt as administrator.
type diskpart[enter]
type list disk[enter]
type select disk X[enter] (where X is replaced with the number that list disk showed your PS3 drive as (you can usually identify it by size).
type clean[enter]
type create partition primary[enter]
type exit[enter]exit[enter]
Download an update PUP file equal to or greater than the firmware that was installed. On a flash drive, create a folder called "PS3" and within that another folder called "UPDATE". Put the update PUP in there, and boot the system with this USB drive in. Let it reinstall everything, and you will know that the system is cleaned completely.
Note: while you have the drive connected to the PC, you might want to go ahead and format it as NTFS and then do a disk scan...just to be sure the drive is OK.
If any windows pop up, just close them. Turn the system back off, pull the PS3 drive, put it back into the PS3, and power up the PS3. Stick an update PUP file on a flash drive
I decided to pull the bluray drive apart again, and manually started the unit, watching the loading operation of the disc/s. Turns out the disc was not turning. There is a smallish cicuit board attached to the drive that I am now suspecting is the issue (is this known as a daughter /or controller board?)
Can anyone tell me where I can order these parts new, and whether this circuit board is "matched" to the motherboard?
