Hey everyone. This is probably my first post on the PS3 side of the forum.

First off, I'm not really much of a PS3 gamer. Played (and finished) 5 games since the launch in 2006 (all Sony exclusives). Anyway I need to know if these jailbreak devices are truly plug and play. My young nephew (12 years old) has had a PS3 for about a year. I want to send him a jailbreak device (across the country). I don't wanna send it to him if it's not plug-n-play. I'm not new to the scene by any means. I've flashed a LOT of Xbox 360s, JTAG'd a dozen more, chipped a LOT of PS2s, PS1s, Xboxes, and GameCubes, so if there is more work to do, then that's not a problem, I just need to know before I send him something he can't use right off the bat.

Thanks in advance for any help. I'm sure someone will be as helpful here, as I am over on the 360 side of AD.

Nope they are

1) Plug in dongle (you can leave dongle plugged in all the time if you want now)
2) Unplug power (slim) / switch off from back (phat)
3) Plug in power / turn on from back
4) Press power followed quickly by eject (within 0.2s of each other otherwise the dongle would work)
5) Install backup manager

When this is done fro first time you only have to do 2,3&4 next time. and 1 as well if you remove the dongle.

So its really a plug-unplug-plug-power-button and play

Note that if your nephew is on firmware 3.55 he wont be able to use it. If he is on 3.50 or 3.42 he'll need to downgrade his console first.
And last of all it is advised to never take your console online if you jailbreak it.

Thanks for the insightful reply bigo93. It's much appreciated. It's kinda what I thought, but wanted to double check.

I think its different types of jailbreaks, different code. Im trying to learn more about ps3 hacking now, got one on the way.

Are new ps3s 3.55? I hope not, i would think not yet though.

Well there has been news that there are now consoles out there with 3.50 on them. I dont know if there are any with 3.55 yet. But as long as its still on 3.50 you can downgrade to 3.41

As for whay payloads are, they are the hax files that are flashed onto the dongles chip. The scene has quietened down now but back when it all started there was a new hex with fixes and improvements out every week. So you had to download and flash your dongle to use the latest hex. dont worry most dongle sites tell you what to do to flash your dongle. If not then you can follow my vids on youtube account name ps3yesfan.

with the dongle you guys are talking about can you rip games to an external HDD and play em that way? This is kinda confusing. Basically, I wanna do to the PS3 what I've done to my Wii. I have all my wii games backed up to an External HDD, how do I use said dongle to do that with the PS3?

you use a backup manager.

Install the BM, then an icon will appear in the game menu of the xmb. run the BM.
Then put in a game disc and press the button to copy.

Have the external drive connected, you can alway have it plugged in, but if you load the BM first then plug in will take a few second to detect.

So when you press copy it will first ask if you want to copy to hdd0, this is the internal hdd, so you click no.
It will then ask if you want to install to usb0, I think or usb something, click yes.
it will then copy the game to the external hdd.

I think copying to the external drive takes longer than internal. and not all games run from external so check before copying.

compatibility list can be found at www.psjcl.com

Of course you can play games from external hdd after you jailbreak the PS3.

juat like bigo93 said , there is a backup manager when you install the PS3 break or other jailbreak items, use the back up manager you can copy the games from your external hdd to your internal hdd, but you alco can just let it in your external hdd and play it from your external hdd. both are ok....

I have been completly out of the loop for the ps3.. I have a PS3 (old style) bought 2 and half years ago.. it has version 3.50? I didn?t know you could do this kind of stuff to it.. Till I noticed in my torrent site that there were PS3 games. so, what I was wondering, What do I need to play back ups of my games? I have been reading site after site after site.. I?m confused now.. do i buy something online, I have read stuff about X3Max, and stuff about putting files on a usb stick? I have no idea where to start or how to go about this.. could someone please email me with some sort of detail at least where to start.. I have been on many different sites and the either talk about version 3.41, or 3.55.. I am 3.50.. what to do? also, I have been reading that you don't need to downgrade anymore? and, what dongle to choose?

Best wait for a few weeks, ppl are working of creating a custom firmware so that you will not need a dongle to jailbreak your console.

But if you are too impatient then yes you will need to buy one of the dongles, and there are a tonne out there to choose from
