Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the screws out of the heatsink of my PS3 without damaging the threads? I was on my 4th YLOD repair and one of the screws snapped off inside the heatsink.

Drill out the center of the screw hole and then use a helicoil.

they make drills to remove broken screws that are made to turn in reverse, as they go in it catches the broken screw and it comes out. They come in varies sizes, it is called an "easy out"
Best part they do not damage the threads

In my experience, they don't work very well on smaller screw sizes.

BigTony i faced the same problem as you, just drill it out, the Heatsink is aluminum so if you screw just a bit larger screw you will make threads.

To be honest i am embarrassed about this, but what the hell...
I got the YLOD last may and cause i have pre-ordered the GT5 Bundle and cause the delay after delay i did in total 14 reflows (no it is not a typo 14 reflows).
All 4 screws and the threads after 5-6 reflow's was ruined and i used screws like this (see picture) with a washer and trust me they screw even better than the original.

Hope that helped, Merry Christmas Everyone

LoL...at least you know they won't break off!

The reason I recommend helicoils is because they are steal threads...they last for hundreds of tighten/loosen cycles...and when they finally wear out, you can just remove them and replace them would making the holes even larger.

Hard to believe i know, but yes i did 14 reflows.
After 4-5 reflows every time i was saying that this YLOD is the lethal one, but every time was proving me wrong, and it still works actually.
With the last reflow i finished castlevania in normal mode and transferred all the data from the 60gb to slim.

SDF_GR - I'm half tempted to give you one of my fan controllers just because it would be solid proof that they prevent YLODs that were guaranteed to happen otherwise. However, I know you are going for the Guinness record for most reflows on a single PS3, and I don't want to take that from you. ;)

With a heat Gun, level perfectly the mobo, pre-heat the mobo and reflow the chip for about 20 seconds with about 10cm distance, and let it cool for about 30 minutes and you are done.

LOOOL
Thank you mate but (after numerous delays)finally last month i received the GT5 Bundle and i am ok now :)
The 60 is still on the TV furniture just for aesthetic reasons, even though that now it works, i dont turn it on....no more reflows for me thank you LOL

But trust me in my case wasn't cause the fan or overheating, if not all 14 at least 12 i got them just 5 minutes after turning ON the PS3, even before i got the chance to start a game. It was driving me crazy.
I tried everything, removing the HDD, Removing the mobo battery for an hour, nothing only with a reflow was kicking back to life.
For sure though, It was the CPU Chip, after 2-3 reflows i was starting to experiment and made it sure, after that i was just reflowing only the CPU and it was alive again.

Some weird things:
There was a time at 3.42 FW that i did a reflow and the ps3 fan went nuts.
I was bored to open it up again and see what went wrong so i've let it off for 3-4 days.
Meanwhile the 3.50 FW was released so i turned it on, it was still doing like a jumbo jet... after installing the 3.50 FW the fan came back to normal......

The Card that some call it the wifi card, well it isn't just a wifi card.
My ps3 is via cable connected to the router, without the card connected even though that the green led at the PS3's lan plug is ON and the routers also, if you try to connect ps3 to the net, it pop's-up the very same message as when you havent connect a cable.(i cant remember exactly how it says it)

No matter what it is missing it powers on.
I have turned it on without, BD, Mobo battery, Lan Card.
I haven't tested it without the fan though

btw.... "Data Transfer Utility" it may transfer everything and i mean everything even the PSN ID (not the password though) but for 149gb it took 10 hours and 35 minutes!!!
It started by saying "3hours and 14 minutes remaining" but it took 10 and a half!!
There was a point that was saying "9 minutes remaining" for about 2 hours.
I works in a bizarre way.
Cause i have made a backup to external drive once and cause the FAT limitation and for "security" reasons it looks normal to break the data in parts....but between PS3's??
i dont know if for some odd sony "security" reason it secures/compress the data but It goes likes this (based on HDD LED's):
A=old ps3
B=new ps3

A reading for 1-2 minutes,stops
B writing for 30 seconds - 1 minute
Simultaneously A reading, B writing for about 10 minutes
1 stops, 2 reading/writing and i dont know what else but the led stays ON without blinking at all for about 20 minutes, B stops (eventually)
and back from the start, this is the cycle again and again.

Every time that this cycle ends the remaining time changes in a surprise way.
You cant never be sure what is going to come, it may write 5 minutes less or 3 hours more... literally i wanted to set them on fire and dance around them lol

Happy New Year!!!....and without reflows!

Awesome, loud fan would not bother me to protect from over heating. There is something you do to an xbox 360 fans (I have done) that makes them spin faster and it is also louder. Noise is not a big deal.

It is louder, but I really don't think it is very loud...top speed is no where near as loud as the "fan test".

However, I was playing with my arduinoscope today...I figured out that the PS3 NEVER runs the fan over ~66%, even during the fan test...but that the fan itself is rated for 100% duty cycle. I might just have to make a "special edition" that runs the fan at true full speed...just to see if it makes anyone def.

I had my suspicions that they were messing with the fan speed through firmware updates, and that is about as close to proof as I am going to get without doing an upgrade/downgrade cycle. It really shouldn't be too surprising; Sony killing old consoles in order to sell new systems and $150 reflows just makes sense. One of these days I'll have to do the readings both ways on the same system.

For the fan cause i haven't changed anything to the PS3 i am 100% that you'll get different readings.
I wrote it 1st on the list for a reason i was really surprised with that.
I was 2 minutes on the xmb and it was working so loud that i was thinking to hide behind the couch. I didnt even knew that the PS3 fan can go so high.
After the FW UD i was playing Uncharted 2 and the fan was playing between level 2-3-4.

Waiting for the results!
