Was wondering what media types can a PS3 play?

I know it can play BluRay but what about the following:

DVD
DVD+-R
DVD+-RW
CD
MP3 CD

?????

It's not what media it can support but what codec it supports.

Sony refused to pay for the rights to use many of the popular codecs groups are using, and so it cannot play them and displays unsupported media instead.

I cannot wait for cfw on the ps3 so that it can finally "do everything" that sony claimed it supposedly can do with their restrictions.

Sony PS3 itself can play DVD, Music CDs (both original and copies) it also plays Blurays (originals) though I don`t know about backup copies of blurays as I have never tried them. Thats about all it can play at the moment as like someone said earlier Sony was too tight ass to fork out some money so they can use codecs to be able to play all other files through the PS3.
Now on the other hand if you have (like I do) A Media Server (like PS3 Media Server) it will allow you to play practically all files out there (like avi, mkv, mpeg, 3gp, WMA, VOB, ect).
The Media player runs off your computer and it links with your PS3. So basically all the movies and or music and files you have on your computer can be seen on your TV Via the PS3.
